As If I've Never Loved (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 46
Ansel’s subordinate was taciturn, as befit a soldier.
For Eloise, who had been lost in thought over how she should respond if he pressed her about her relationship with Ansel Blaine, this was a fortunate turn.
Still, unable to completely ignore the curiosity in his eyes, Eloise explained that they had been childhood friends but had lost touch long ago, and that today’s meeting was a chance reunion.
The subordinate congratulated her on this remarkable coincidence and added that Ansel had been commissioned as a captain in the Intelligence Division of the Brighton Military Office.
He went on to say that although he had served under Captain Blaine for barely a month, it was an honor to work under such an exceptional superior.
Though the man appeared easily six or seven years older than Ansel, who was twenty-four, there was not a speck of pretense in his eyes.
His gaze held genuine loyalty and warmth.
Even though Eloise had heard since childhood about Ansel’s outstanding qualities, she felt unexpectedly reassured all the same.
‘He may have become the black sheep of his family, but in this regard, he hasn’t changed at all.’
She had inwardly worried that Ansel’s aide might question the nature of her relationship with him, but fortunately, she sensed no such suspicion.
Even if they were childhood friends, his order to escort her to a house where she lived alone might have sounded odd—but perhaps it had merely been her own anxiety, as no explanation proved necessary.
No matter how many times she’d received advances from men in the capital, it seemed she still didn’t appear to be a fitting match for the extraordinary Ansel Blaine.
Then again, upon reflection, every man who had approached her had been thoroughly disreputable.
Thus, if she were to be honest, Eloise Bailey—possessing neither status nor fortune—undoubtedly belonged in that very world populated by those unsavory men.
The realization made her cheeks flush uncontrollably.

My Step-brother Is Obsessed With Me (Female-dominant)
A gentle female protagonist vs pitiful in the early stage, and a sick male protagonist in the later stage
Cheng Songer transmigrated into the body of a vicious cannon fodder female supporting character with the same name as her in a female-dominant novel.
In the original story, the cannon fodder female supporting character was inhumane, committing domestic violence, gambling excessively, being lustful, and even wanting to sell her stepbrother to a brothel for money.
As luck would have it, she just happened to transmigrate at this time.
Seeing Cheng Qingzhi biting his lip, enduring the tears in his eyes, looking pitiful, her heart softened.
She stuffed the money back into the Madam’s hand and reached out to him.
“Brother, come home with me.”
