I knew there were no shared carriages departing at night.

But since this was the capital of the kingdom, I thought there might be an exception—no, I wanted to believe there was.

Because without even the tiniest sliver of hope, I wouldn’t have been able to endure it.

Unfortunately, however, no such exception existed.

Thus, on the very day she arrived in the capital, Eloise decided to wait until dawn in the very corner of the street where the carriage had dropped her off.

The memory of her first arrival here was still vivid.

How terrifying the dim, pitch-black streets and the beggars huddled everywhere had been.

Yet Eloise wasn’t afraid anymore.

Perhaps it was because she’d passed through this place countless times since starting her work and grown accustomed to the capital’s underbelly—or perhaps because the most frightening thing imaginable had already happened to her.

What mattered was that, in the deepest depths of the night, Eloise was scarcely different from them.

Her hair was wildly tangled, her clothes disheveled, and her face smeared with tearstains—all of which made her seem even more so.

But she was utterly exhausted.

To rest her weary body, she walked beneath a bridge, where the sharp smell of river water hit her nostrils.

Those already settled there eyed her warily for a moment, but quickly turned away, sensing no real threat.

Eloise bit her lip tightly to keep fresh tears from falling again and slowly sank down, leaning against the damp pillar.
