That day, Eloise did not embrace the steward to receive her wages.

Though frightened by Mr. Lylance’s sudden approach, she showed her disapproval of his absurd proposition by glaring back without retreating.

Seeing her brimming with tears yet stubbornly refusing to cry, Lylance laughed awkwardly, seemingly flustered.

In the end, the steward consoled his disappointment by kissing the tip of Eloise’s hair.

Holding the envelope of money, Eloise stood near the chicken coop after leaving the steward’s office, finally letting the tears she’d held back fall drop by drop.

Just the brush of his lips against her hair had been horrifying enough; though she’d narrowly avoided the worst, she felt uneasy about what might come next.

She was certain that if she’d kissed Mr. Lylance or embraced him tightly, she wouldn’t have been able to wear a natural expression at tonight’s dinner table.

But the thought that Ansel might not be there tonight either once again filled her mind with noise.

“I was afraid you’d left. Afraid that when I returned home, you’d simply be gone.”

“I was scared. So scared I wondered if I’d ever felt fear like this before.”

His once-soft voice still echoed vividly in her ears.

Back then, she’d thought he was lying—but now, Eloise believed she finally understood his feelings. Thinking this way almost felt like punishment.
