Ansel immediately set off once more toward the capital. Instead of resting briefly in Longfield to recover from his fatigue, he spurred his horse forward with urgent haste.

Solely for Eloise. There was no other reason.

“If it’s to ease my loneliness, that’s commendable, but….”

Merrill continued, shifting the cigar between her slender fingers.

“Isn’t this far too frequent a visit?”

“I apologize.”

As expected, Ansel—who clearly had just returned from visiting his maternal grandfather—lowered his head slightly.

Though not enough time had passed for him to have traveled all the way to the distant south, it wasn’t implausible that he’d returned straightaway without rest, likely having received little more than a cold dismissal.

His hollow, sleepless eyes and disheveled, wrinkled clothes alone made it clear he’d ridden the entire way himself without pause.

What on earth could he be so desperate for?

“As you know, your father isn’t at home.”

“I’m aware.”

“Did you perhaps bring another letter? I haven’t even delivered the one you gave me the day before yesterday.”

(Technically, she’d tossed it straight into the fireplace—but unaware of this, Ansel silently regarded his stepmother, who feigned regret.)

“Ansel.”
