The surgery continued for several hours.

What if something went wrong? What if she’d never see him again?

No matter how long she waited, there was no news, and it felt as if her mind was being violently churned into chaos.

Unable to suppress her anxiety any longer, Da Jung abruptly shot up from her seat. As she nervously chewed her lips and paced restlessly up and down the corridor, an irritated voice cut through the air.

“Seriously, could you just stop? You’re driving me crazy.”

The one complaining was Jin Seop, Cheol Jung’s eldest son.

Throughout the surgery, he frequently left his seat. Each time he returned, the strong smell of cigarettes clung to him—as if he’d been chain-smoking somewhere.

Anxiety clung thickly to his exhausted face. Da Jung lowered her head and sat down immediately on the chair beside her.

“I’m—I’m so sorry.”

“…Ugh, that’s exactly why I’ve been telling you to stop raising those kids already.”

Perhaps sensing guilt in Da Jung’s pale face, Jin Seop didn’t continue. Instead, he roughly scratched his head and muttered something irrelevant under his breath.

He had only ever visited the orphanage on major occasions like holidays or Cheol Jung’s birthday. Even then, he merely showed his face briefly and left, never displaying any interest in caring for the children.

Did someone like him even have the right to blame the orphanage? He hadn’t visited even once during Cheol Jung’s most difficult period.

As she stared at the floor, biting her lip tightly, he quietly muttered in a tone laced with a sigh:

“Honestly, it’s better off gone.”
