He stressed the phrase “tonight” with deliberate intensity.

“That’s….”

I was the one who truly wanted to know where I was going right now. Thanks to briefly waking up, my body felt even heavier, and exhaustion from the grueling flight had already reached its peak.

Da Jung tightly bit her lip and quickly reviewed her options.

An impossible choice—her friend’s place—or a motel, not ideal but easily accessible. Her mind swung back and forth like a pendulum.

After a brief silence, Da Jung lifted her head, seemingly resolved.

“I need to stop by a convenience store for something.”

“Must it be *right now*, at this hour?”

“It’s urgent.”

“Even carrying your bag again?”

“Oh, that’s… You see, if I open and close the front door, the electronic lock makes noise. Since I live with a roommate, I shouldn’t wake them…”

Having decided to head to the motel, Da Jung hastily fabricated an excuse. Though she felt uneasy repaying Eun Hye’s kindness with a lie, she couldn’t bring herself to brazenly violate internal regulations.

“I see…?”

His sharp eyes scanned Da Jung as if probing for something. Nervously tensed, Da Jung quickly—but naturally—averted her gaze.

“Yes. That’s right.”

“How far is the convenience store? Let’s take the car.”

“No need to drive me! It’s late—please just head home.”

If she obediently gave him the store’s location, he’d undoubtedly stand guard not only in front of the shop but also on her return trip. Da Jung vigorously waved both hands outward in the air.

Tae Sang furrowed his brows and stared intently at Da Jung. His lips twitched as if about to speak, but instead, he passed by her side, stirring a faint breeze.

“Go home quickly.”

“…Okay.”

Da Jung murmured a faint reply and quietly focused her attention behind her. *Thud, thud.* As the footstep sounds faded, she sensed his presence gradually receding.

Moments later, the sound of a car door opening and closing rang out, and headlights flooded the narrow alleyway. Da Jung exhaled the breath she’d been holding all at once.

“Phew….”

The unfamiliar lie had made her break out in a cold sweat. As she relaxed her tensed shoulders, Tae Sang’s car glided past her smoothly, like a fish swimming through water.

Gathering her guilt-ridden conscience, Da Jung stepped beneath a streetlight. Even if lying invited heavenly punishment, that could wait—right now, she had urgent matters to handle.

First on the list: turning her uniform into casual clothes.

Da Jung loosened her neatly styled side-parted hair and untied the scarf around her neck. Then, she pulled a roomy cardigan from her bag and buttoned it all the way up.

Once the sky-blue blouse—virtually the airline’s signature—was concealed, she no longer resembled a flight attendant.

True, her uniform skirt remained, but its near-white, H-line cut looked no different from an ordinary office skirt.

Who would’ve thought the cardigan she wore in the bunk (the crew rest area onboard) to fend off the chill would prove so useful?

Da Jung ran her fingers through her hair and smiled triumphantly. Now, all that remained was finding somewhere to sleep.

“What is *this*…?”

Was the listing—“built just one and a half years ago”—an outright lie? Standing frozen before the motel, Da Jung was speechless.

The cracked ground of the above-ground parking lot, the garish fluorescent pink sign, and the shabby curtain hanging above the entrance—all screamed neglect.

Nothing—from basic maintenance to interior design—suggested anything newer than a year and a half. Da Jung clamped her lips shut and shoved her phone back into her bag.

“Well… It’s only for one night, after all…”

Regardless of appearances, as long as there was a roof overhead, spending one night here wouldn’t pose any real problem. Yet when she tried to step forward, her feet refused to move, rooted to the ground.

It wasn’t the old building or its mediocre exterior that stopped her—it was the strange, unsettling sense of secrecy the place exuded.

The motel entrance wasn’t directly accessible from the street.

The opaque glass door sat deep within the building’s recess, and reaching it required climbing roughly five or six steps.

The design, clearly intended to shield guests from passersby, rapidly unsettled her barely composed nerves.

“Phew….”

Da Jung deeply exhaled and hoisted her bag. In moments like this, action outweighed thought. Any further hesitation would inevitably prevent her from going in at all.

Deliberately taking larger-than-usual strides, she heard yellow headlights spill into the alley’s end. The overwhelming glare seemed to urge her forward, as if demanding she hurry inside.

Da Jung glanced briefly at the light and ascended the stairs. Each step produced a crisp *tap-tap* as the blunt heels of her shoes struck the marble floor.

Halfway up, a foreign sound mingled with the familiar rhythm.

The engine gradually idling to a stop. A car door opening with a *click*.

Was the driver also planning to stay at this motel? She had no desire to awkwardly share check-in with a stranger.

Da Jung hurried up the remaining stairs. As she firmly gripped the long handle and pulled forward, something suddenly whooshed past her temple.

– *Thud!*

A large hand blocked her view. Its thick knuckles and prominent blue veins unmistakably belonged to a man, and this abruptly appearing hand forcefully pressed against the glass door.

Da Jung flinched and stepped back—just as a deep voice dropped heavily above her, as if barricading her retreat.

“Is this a convenience store?”

“…!”

His voice struck her like a physical blow. Eyes wide, she froze on the spot. She knew who stood behind her even without turning around.

“…”

“Then again, probably not.”

Receiving no answer, the man supplied one himself.

Da Jung slowly turned, her face ashen. Every joint in her body creaked stiffly, making her feel like a broken ball-jointed doll.

Finally facing him fully, she met his rigid expression—clearly furious—and her courage instantly shriveled.

“De-deputy Director, it’s just… there are some complicated reasons for coming here…”

“I see.”

Tae Sang ended his sentence with a curt drop of intonation. Frankly, he wasn’t curious at all about the nature of those “complicated reasons.”

No matter the justification, he had no intention of leaving her alone here at a place lacking even basic window bars.

He intensified the chill in his already sharp gaze.

“Then I’ll listen on the way.”

“On the way… where?”

“Home.”

Tae Sang smoothly released the door, picked up the nearby trolley, and effortlessly lifted the heavy bag into the air.

*Home…?*

His sheer confidence left her speechless. Only her breath escaped through slightly parted lips before he decisively turned away.

In that instant, her senses snapped back.

“W-wait! Just a moment—no, you can’t!”

Da Jung urgently grabbed Tae Sang’s arm. Though his arm felt as unyielding as stone, making her hesitate to pull harder, thankfully, he stopped.

Dark shadows faintly veiled his cold face.

Was he angry at her lie? Da Jung stiffened further, her expression tight with tension as she looked at him.

“…I really can’t go home. There are… some reasons.”

“Then neither is the motel acceptable. As a rule, Air Korea flight attendants may only wear their uniforms inside commercial facilities located *within* the airport.”

“…”

How did he—someone not even working on-site—memorize such minute regulations? Da Jung lowered her head, silently reproaching his impeccable diligence.

“I… I’m truly sorry, but could you just pretend not to have seen me this once? Anyway, my uniform isn’t even noticeable anymore…”

Da Jung murmured, brushing her ivory skirt with her palm.

The plain, unadorned skirt; the dull beige ribbed cardigan—aside from the missing employee badge, her outfit barely differed from that of an office worker grabbing lunch near Gangnam Station.

Tae Sang silently studied her before quietly speaking.

“So that’s why you let your hair down, too?”

“Yes…”

Having been tightly curled all day, her long straight hair now bore thick, undulating waves. Though the strands fanned out quite naturally, it hardly helped her current predicament.

Da Jung gathered the loose strands and neatly swept them forward over her shoulder. In response, Tae Sang’s eyes followed the motion fluidly.

“Indeed, you don’t exactly look like someone in uniform now.”

“R-right? Then maybe I could just stay like this…”

“No.”

“…But you just said I don’t look like I’m in uniform?”

“Even so.”

His low voice struck finality. His uncompromising attitude shattered the fragile hope she’d briefly harbored, leaving Da Jung unable to protest further—she merely bit her lip in silence.

If he was going to be this inflexible, why even feign willingness to allow it? As frustration simmered, his voice reached her ear, subtly altered in tone.

“I can’t leave you alone. Not at this hour, not in a place like this.”

“…”

Da Jung, who’d assumed he rigidly adhered to rules, stood dumbfounded, caught completely off guard.

“I’ll take you home.”

He deliberately shortened his long stride, yet sensed no movement behind him. Tae Sang halted abruptly and turned his head.

“What are you waiting for? Come on.”

“Well, it’s just…”

Though standing two steps lower, his eye level remained distinctly higher. His downward gaze landed sharply on Da Jung’s face.

“It’s not peak traffic, but the drive will still take quite a while.”

“*Quite* a while…?”

The oddly exaggerated phrasing nagged at her. It was only a fifteen-minute walk—by car, five minutes should suffice.

Da Jung tilted her head curiously and continued, her expression puzzled.

“My place is really close from here.”

“My place isn’t.”

“…!”

Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away

This is also on my reread list!

This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.

Definitely worth a read, y’all!

The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.

But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.

Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.

I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.

The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.

As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
