Jun’s dark brown eyes, meeting mine directly, showed no hint of wavering.

As if it wasn’t a mistake, as if it wasn’t a joke—those deep eyes, revealing some indescribable resolute will, simply kept staring at me quietly.

The feeling that your gaze was trapping me made me miss the timing to look away. But accepting your gaze like that was too much for me. I was scared you might hear my breathing starting to quicken.

The moment I moved my lips, thinking I had to break this silence somehow, a faint smile began to spread across Jun’s face.

“Your lipstick was smudged. Now it’s fixed.”

Jun straightened the upper body that had been leaning toward me. Now able to perfectly hide his expression from me, he fixed his gaze straight ahead, put the laptop into his bag, and spoke in a low voice.

“The mission to put Lee Ha Ru to sleep seems pretty much cleared. Ha Ru, you should go home now. No matter how much you want to stay with me, I’m unfortunately a fairly well-known film director. I think I’ll have to work without leaving from now on…”

I don’t know why, but even though he said it like a joke, all I could feel in his voice was loneliness, not playfulness.

I ended up staring at his back for quite a long time.

A café near the broadcasting station that I squeezed in time to visit during lunch.

Jung Eun shakes her head at me. Pretending not to notice, I quickly took a big bite of the sandwich in my hand.

The tomato wasn’t cut properly, so a whole slice slid right into my mouth. Still perfectly round from being sliced horizontally. I was clearly eating a cheese sandwich, yet my mouth was filled only with tomato flavor.

“Lee Ha Ru, I really don’t understand you.”

I had a vague idea of what she was going to say next. The signs of my heart wavering made me scared. Instead of answering, I took another bite of the now-flattened sandwich with the tomato missing.
