“That makes sense.”

It wasn’t an explanation, an excuse, or anything like that. Just an acknowledgment that it could be true—spoken with understanding, yet hinting it might not actually be the case.

“Ha Ru said she’s called Director Kim’s house several times, but couldn’t get through, and hasn’t heard back from him at all. You know how she is—she tends to overthink things alone and get scared off before even trying. She probably assumed he was furious with her for not contacting him for so long, so she just quietly gave up…”

The voice reciting my situation in such vivid detail paused briefly as it met a soft sigh at the end. Yet Jung Eun managed to continue speaking without letting too much emotion seep into her voice—perhaps because our beginning still connects directly to our present.

Thankfully, we weren’t the same people as a few months ago—those foolishly convinced that our never-ending separation, born from our inability to forget each other, would somehow finally come to an end.

He tilted his head slightly toward me, as if this was actually what he wanted to say to me. His lips, lowered in volume, shaped the words “I really am wronged,” accompanied by a smile that caught my attention.

“As Writer Seo said, I did know Ha Ru’s email address. Or rather, more accurately—I thought I knew it.”

“What do you mean…?”

“You just said, ‘If you’d only sent one email.’ Exactly. Just one email would’ve been enough. Or rather, just one email needed to have actually gone through.”
