“Oh, come on! I keep telling you—I’m against redevelopment, against reconstruction, period!”

Gwang Soon shouted toward Director Dong, who was knocking on her front door. But Director Dong, who’d already been turned away from this house several times, seemed resolute—calmly softening their approach.

“Madam, this isn’t the time to dig in your heels. Do you think I’m doing this just for my own benefit? It’s for the good of every resident of Hwami Apartments!”

“What nonsense about digging in heels? Only desperate folks with nothing resort to things like that.”

Gwang Soon clicked her tongue and shredded boiled black-bone chicken breast into pieces fine enough for baby food—nutritious fare she was preparing for Seok Dong, who’d grown noticeably thinner after dealing with rude, uneducated troublemakers and even having to visit the police station.

“Knock on that door till your knuckles bleed—I won’t be stamping any consent form. If they redevelop, all sorts of riffraff will move in and ruin Gangnam’s vibe. You want me to just stand by and watch that happen? Seriously, do they think money makes them noble? ‘Oh look, we’re Gangnam residents now!’—carrying on like that’ll drag the whole neighborhood down!”

Her grumbling soon swelled into a full-blown shout loud enough to reach beyond the front entrance. No matter how frustrated Director Dong got or how hard they stomped their feet, Gwang Soon—busy preparing her black-bone chicken and mung bean porridge—was utterly unmoved.

“Yes, Madam Shin.”

When the refined classical ringtone her son had set played, Gwang Soon turned on speakerphone and answered gracefully.

—“Director Dong visited your place too, didn’t they, Madam Nam?”

“Shaking up such a quiet neighborhood like this—everyone’s gone mad for money.”

—“Well… about that, Madam Nam. You know your son, right? The one who passed the administrative civil service exam last year.”

“Oh, of course I do. What about your brilliant son?”

She replied warmly, but secretly, Gwang Soon found it ridiculous that Madam Shin was flaunting her son simply for passing the civil service exam.
