“I didn’t dig too deeply. I just received one email claiming to report something about Congressman Cha, so I met with the client. Oh, of course, Congressman Cha—I personally hold you in high regard too. Still, I couldn’t help wondering if this person was just some lunatic. Yet, as a journalist, shouldn’t I still seek the truth? Anyway, you’ve always shown exceptional interest in orphans, teens from broken homes, and education. You’ve supported not just one or two daycare centers—you’re active nationwide, nationwide. That struck me as slightly odd.”

*Click.* Director Lee pressed the pause button, and the slick, oily voice echoing in Nam Tae’s study abruptly cut off. He’d been sitting alone on the sofa, listening to the recording file from the journalist he’d just met.

“Hah.”

An involuntary, self-mocking sigh slipped out.

When he’d first resolved to abandon the bar exam and dedicate himself to supporting Nam Tae, he’d imagined himself merely handling paperwork. Yet increasingly, he found himself tangled in sordid affairs that gave him headaches.

At first, he’d assumed the journalist was just another opportunist trying to squeeze money out of them, but this one clearly knew quite a bit. He couldn’t pinpoint exactly who had supplied the information, but the tipster was likely one of the individuals on Nam Tae’s list of benefactors.

Scanning the sponsor list with hawk-like intensity, he methodically crossed names off, one by one.

The number of wards he’d assisted, in big and small ways alike, had now long surpassed a hundred—mostly teenagers in their late teens, or young adults in their twenties facing hardship. Nam Tae had deliberately selected individuals likely to exert social influence within a relatively short time frame.

Ji Se Ah and I were among them—indeed, we were the ones most thoroughly exploited to satisfy Nam Tae’s selfish desires.

‘Despicable bastard.’

Recalling the journalist who’d vanished after pocketing a bag of cash, Director Lee’s brow furrowed.

Hearing footsteps on the second-floor staircase, Director Lee quickly stood up, shoved the USB drive deep into his pants pocket, and moved from the sofa to stand by the door. As the sound of shoes halted before the door, he swiftly opened it.

“Have you arrived, Congressman?”

“Yes, indeed. Director Lee.”

At Nam Tae’s subtle signal, the aide trailing behind him vanished—this new aide had recently replaced Director Lee as Nam Tae’s constant companion.
