Lee Hyun, who had come home earlier than usual, felt a strange flutter in his chest as he saw his mother and Yura Jin waiting for him at the front door. For a fleeting moment, he thought this feeling wasn’t so bad after all.

His mother was talkative by nature and had a knack for making subtle, probing remarks that often left him irritated during their conversations.

Still, she was his mother—he couldn’t scold her or treat her coldly. In fact, his decision to move out from the family home had been largely driven by how incompatible he felt with her; her influence accounted for about eighty percent of that choice.

Yet seeing Yura Jin standing beside his mother to welcome him felt so natural, as if they’d always done this together.

He’d only glimpsed such scenes occasionally back at the family home, but Yura always smiled warmly and chatted easily with his mother. With Yura around, he thought he might actually be able to listen patiently to his mother’s stories.

“You’re home?”

“What made you come home so early today?”

“You told me to come early.”

Yura Jin listened to their calm exchange between mother and son and barely held back a smile. Despite appearances, the two were remarkably alike.

They spoke casually, yet warmth shimmered in their eyes. Yura Jin wondered if the occasional gentleness Lee Hyun showed might actually come from his mother.

Watching Mi Hee—so different in demeanor from her own mother—tugged softly at Yura’s heart.

She already liked Baek Lee Hyun so much, and now even felt herself growing fond of her in-laws, which left her bewildered. She hadn’t realized that knowing something couldn’t last forever could gnaw so deeply at one’s heart.

“Go change your clothes. Dinner’s almost ready.”

As Yura Jin watched Lee Hyun nod lightly and head upstairs, Mi Hee nudged her gently from the side.

“He came home early just to see you. Go on, follow him.”
