“Come and see this, Nuna.”

Eunseo was cluelessly dragged out of her room by Seungju, who was holding her wrist.

“What’s all the fuss about?”

In his room, Seungju excitedly pointed at the frozen frame on his laptop screen.

“It’s Butler Kim!”

The person on the screen appeared to be a man in his early 70s. His face was sun-tanned, but he stood straight and his eyes were clear, making him look no less dignified than the high-ranking white-collar workers sitting around him.

Butler Kim had been taking care of Seungju’s maternal family’s affairs since his youth. Seungju explained that when his mother married his father, her father sent Butler Kim along with her.

“Even when Mom started living separately from Dad, Butler Kim wanted to go with her, but he couldn’t. Mom couldn’t afford to pay him a salary, and she thought it was better to keep at least one of her people at the main house.”

“So, he’s on your side?”

Seungju nodded vigorously.

“After my maternal grandparents passed away, Mom relied on him like a brother. So to me, he’s like a great-uncle.”

“When did you last see him?”

“When Mom disappeared. He consoled me a lot, saying not to worry, that Mom would never think of leaving me.”

Although the ‘original’ Seungju must have interacted with Butler Kim up to the time of the inauguration, the Seungju now only remembered him from 16 years ago.

“He must be like a grandfather to you now.”

Seungju looked at the video wistfully. Without any other relatives than his less-than-fatherly father, it was natural to feel affectionate.

“Does he still work at the chairman’s house?”

“No. Less than a year after Mom and I left, Dad fired him. He then moved to the countryside to manage an orchard.”

It was understandable – why would a husband keep his estranged wife’s aide around?

“Do you remember his phone number?”

“Yes. But it’s from 15 years ago…”

“It could still be the same. Adults don’t change their numbers often.”

This could mean another ally for Seungju. And given that he attended the inauguration two years ago, he might know things Seungju doesn’t remember.

“Give him a call.”

“What if someone else answers?”

“Just say you dialed the wrong number and hang up. Try calling him.”

Taking a deep breath, Seungju picked up his phone. Eunseo stopped him, suddenly remembering something.

“Wait, Seungju. Maybe don’t mention your memory loss yet.”

“Why?”

“It’s been a long time. People change, you know. Meet him first, and if he’s still on your side, then tell him.”

Seungju thought Butler Kim wouldn’t be like that, but he understood Eunseo’s concern.

“Okay.”

Nodding, Seungju dialed the number with a pounding heart.

The calm, mature voice on the other end was instantly recognizable as Butler Kim.

“Um…”

Seungju hesitated. Should he introduce himself as Seungju or as Chairman Kwon? Before he could decide, the other person spoke first.

Concern was evident in the butler’s voice. It seemed he had been worried for a while with no contact.

“I’m in Seoul. I’ll explain when we meet.”

It seemed he was still in the countryside. As Seungju pondered a meeting place, Butler Kim suddenly asked.

[Dash] Is the house in Yeonsa-dong still standing before demolition?
Butler Kim was aware of the demolition, which surprised Seungju a bit. However, on second thought, it made sense. Butler Kim had worked for the maternal side of the family, and this house originally belonged to Seungju’s maternal grandmother, so it had a connection to him. It was reasonable that he had been informed about the demolition.

[Dash] “I’d like to see the house one last time before it’s demolished. Could you please ask the tenant for permission?”

The tenant, listening to the conversation right beside Seungju, nodded.

“Yes, I’ll ask for their consent. We are close, so they’ll likely agree.”

With this, it was arranged for Butler Kim to visit the house around lunchtime the next day. The meeting was set to take place while Eunseo was at work.

“Make sure to have a good talk. Until you’re sure he’s on your side, be careful not to let on about your memory loss or that you’re living here.”

“Yes, Nuna.”

“But your clothes…they’ll make him suspicious right away.”

Eunseo looked disapprovingly at Seungju’s T-shirt and jeans. The original Kwon Seungju would never wear such clothes, especially not when going out.

“We need to get you a suit.”

Surprised, Seungju protested as Eunseo got up.

“What? But we didn’t even have enough for the roof repair, how can we afford a suit…”

Eunseo pulled out a credit card.

“Suits can be bought on installment!”

It was a suit they had bought together at an outlet the day before. Although it was last season’s stock, it wasn’t cheap as it was a branded item.
