Ael picked up the cushion embroidered with the Hebridis family crest, glanced at the books lined on the bookshelf against the wall, and then gazed out the window where rain poured down in torrents.

This room, too, stirred her heart—but the real reason her pulse still raced so fiercely was something else entirely.

Ael placed her hand against one of the walls.

‘I wonder if Mr. Kyle has already fallen asleep?’

Kyle had spoken at length with the count and, as a result, had drunk far more wine than Ael.

He, too, had been striving all day to secure the deal, so perhaps his tension had finally eased, allowing him to fall asleep early.

She knew his quarters were also on the top floor of the mansion—close to her own room.

Back then, she hadn’t given it a second thought, but why did she keep becoming so acutely aware of Kyle on the other side of this wall today?

‘I must be going mad.’

Ael pressed the back of her hand to her flushed cheek.

‘But how could I not be affected when Mr. Kyle acted like that?’

His voice calling her his fiancée still echoed in her ears, and the warmth of the hand that had pulled her shoulder remained vividly fresh.

Now that their objective had been achieved, this act would come to an end.

Once night passed and morning arrived—and once they left this mansion—they would revert to being mere employees of Ash Trading Company.

She recalled Ino recently grumbling that he’d been growing busier by the day.
