While Ael was lost in thought, the carriage, having barely freed itself from the congestion, began to move again. Thanks to this, Ael snapped out of her reverie and could once more ponder the conversation she had just overheard.

‘He said he wouldn’t reveal where he is.’

People had assumed he would be staying in the Empire, where Ash Trading Company’s headquarters were located.

After all, to oversee business operations and manage ships and supplies traveling across the continent, he naturally ought to be in the Empire.

Yet, up until now, he had never disclosed his whereabouts or his next destination. Thus, even those eager to meet him had no idea where to go.

‘They said the greatest secret of Ash Trading Company is his identity and whereabouts.’

And now such a man was coming to Denertum.

‘This will be an incredible opportunity for Denertum.’

Ael recalled the continental economic indicators she had seen a month ago in a borrowed magazine.

Ash Trading Company was said to elevate the standard of every nation it entered, bringing about an enormous economic impact.

‘He surely isn’t just coming for leisure… Perhaps he’s coming to assess the place for further investment.’

She didn’t know what about this country had caught his interest, but she hoped he would find a reason to stay here for a long time.

‘Given that it’s said to be the quietest nation on the continent… Maybe he’s coming here to rest. If he has a family, perhaps they’ll come and live together?’

While Ael, excited, kept spinning various thoughts in her head, the coachman’s voice rang out.

“We’ve arrived.”

Startled, Ael looked outside and saw that the entrance to the Academy Library was right before her.

Hastily stepping down and settling the fare, Ael hurried into the library.

She had already lost a considerable amount of time in the chaos of the central plaza. If she didn’t hurry, her parents would surely find out about this outing.

Half-running toward the reading room, Ael drew a disapproving glance from a library staff member, apparently bothered by her loud footsteps.

Covering her face with her hat, Ael produced the item she had secretly taken from her father’s study.

It was an identification card bearing her father’s name.

More precisely, it was an ID granting access to the Academy Library.

Though the entire continent was swept up in winds of change, Denertum remained stubbornly archaic.

In some republic elsewhere, commoners directly elected their representatives and even granted women equal voting rights—but such things were still distant dreams in Denertum.

Here, women couldn’t even read books freely.

According to Denertum’s mythology, women were beings fashioned by the gods from the leftover scraps after creating men.

Thus, they were inherently deficient.

This belief was so deeply entrenched that Denertum’s people regarded women as physically inferior to men and too unintelligent to properly absorb instruction, deeming them foolish creatures.

Therefore, even noblewomen were still barred from enrolling in Denertum’s Academy.

Consequently, they were also forbidden from using the Academy Library.

The only time a woman could enter the library was when sent on an errand.

The staff member checked the ID and, glancing at Ael’s attire, asked,

“Are you a tutor? Did your employer send you on an errand?”

“Yes. I was told to borrow books for the young lady’s education.”

The familiar question prompted an effortless lie. Though, in truth, it wasn’t entirely false—after all, she would end up reading every book she borrowed today herself, so they truly were for her own education.

The staff member verified the ID once more and then granted her entry.

Her steps instinctively led her to the reference room. Soon, she spotted the bookshelf where newly arrived books were placed.

“Oh…”

Her eyes, brimming with emotion, scanned the books on the shelf. It had already been three months since her last visit.

Her father had obtained an Academy Library membership merely for show but had never used it.

He’d tossed the card somewhere in his study and forgotten its existence—until Ael discovered it while cleaning.

Normally, she would have just left it on his desk, but the day before, she’d happened to read a newspaper article her father had left out, reporting that a large shipment of Imperial books had arrived at the Academy Library.

After fiddling with her father’s ID for a long while, Ael finally decided the next day to sneak out with it and head to the Academy Library.

Her heart nearly leapt out of her chest in fear that her father might chase after her at any moment, shouting, “What insolence is this!”—yet her curiosity to see Imperial books drove her forward.

The first time she came, she didn’t know where to go or the borrowing procedures, and there were several close calls—but fortunately, she managed to borrow books.

That night, alone in her room, how her heart had raced as she read Imperial books written in the continental common tongue!

Of course, there were books at home—her father’s study was full of them. But they were all old.

Books made more for display than reading, crafted to beautify noble libraries, releasing clouds of dust and stale odors whenever opened.

These were the very books Ael had secluded herself with as a child and read cover to cover.

Aside from those, Ael had no other books to read—her father bought no new ones, and he disliked her reading.

“Excessive knowledge inevitably leads to arrogance.”

He didn’t want his daughter to become clever. Perhaps Elise, his second daughter, was different—but as the eldest, Ael gaining knowledge would be utterly useless to her anyway.

“You’ll end up serving your husband regardless—what good is reading more books? Instead, focus on polishing your lacking charm and conversational skills! Not a single marriage proposal came for you this year! I can’t even hold my head up when people mention you!”

It had been years since she’d been allowed into society—of course no proposals would come.

But saying that aloud would have been lucky to avoid a beating.

In any case, he was a man who showed Ael no kindness whatsoever.

Thus, whenever Ael wanted to read new books, she had to sneak out like this, evading her father’s watchful eyes.

But long tails get stepped on. Six months ago, she was finally caught. That day, Ael was slapped across the face. Her father ordered her not to step outside the mansion for a month.

Naturally, she wasn’t allowed even a single sheet of paper, let alone books.

How agonizing that time had been.

Unable to endure the boredom, she repeatedly wrote formulas with her finger on the fogged-up window.

Even that eventually became impossible, forcing her to do everything in her mind.

Later, due to a shortage of hands for chores, she was allowed out of her room slightly earlier—but she never dared think of taking the ID out again.

“I know it’s wrong. But still…”

Ael gazed at the new books, her face flushed with emotion. Merely looking at them sent waves of joy trembling through her body.

In Denertum—and especially for someone like her, perpetually confined within the mansion—this was her only chance to glimpse the wider world.

With trembling fingers, Ael ran her hand along the spines of the newly arrived books. Just then—

“Hm?”

Something caught her eye.

Amid the new books, something shimmered.

At first, she thought it was sunlight. But the Academy’s shelves were designed so direct light couldn’t reach them.

“What is it?”

Turning her gaze toward where the glint had appeared, she saw a single book sitting alone, separated from the others.

From its appearance alone, Ael recognized it as an Imperial publication.

Unlike Denertum’s books, bound in expensive leather, Imperial books used cloth for their covers.

Though nobles sneered at them as vulgar, Ael preferred Imperial books.

They seemed made for anyone—not just privileged male nobles—to enjoy reading freely and comfortably.

As Ael reached out to properly upright the book, its title came into view.

Heirs of the Golden Law

The moment she saw that title, Ael halted her hand and soon let out a bitter smile.

She recalled something someone had said about her at a past banquet.

That person had called Ael a “failed heir.”

“Even ‘failed heir’ is too generous a term.”

After all, she had never been born an heir of the Golden Law to begin with.

The Golden Law—this was the name given to the power once possessed by the ancient peoples of the continent.

People believed that fundamental laws governed everything in the world.

It was said that long ago, those who perfectly understood these primordial laws—calling them the Golden Laws—applied them to wield astonishing power.

With a mere touch, they could move boulders as large as houses or make water spring forth from parched earth—miraculous abilities like these.

Those who wielded such power were called Heirs of the Golden Law.
