Calon was watching the carriage leave the mansion from his room.

He didn’t even dare think of seeing her off. Ael had abandoned everything and left. The only thing she had taken with her was the single maid who had always stayed by his side.

Aside from that, she hadn’t looked back even once, as if nothing else would be needed for the rest of her life.

Realizing he belonged among the things she deemed unnecessary—things she could discard without a shred of regret—Calon listened intently to the sound of the receding carriage.

But even that sound soon vanished.

Yet Calon kept straining his ears toward the noise beyond the window. Then he lowered his head.

Now, everything was meaningless.

Though the room was silent, a storm raged inside his mind. He was experiencing the emotional tempest commonly felt by those who had committed grave mistakes.

It was what one called regret.

Regret was truly strange.

It forced him to dissect every moment he had once passed over carelessly, confronting his own foolishness.

Each time Calon revisited his actions and words, sliced into fragments by the second, he was left speechless.

What he had once considered his rightful privilege now appeared, upon reflection, as nothing more than petty venting.

Strangely, regret came without the blessing of forgetfulness. Every past scene grew sharper each time he recalled it. And so vividly clear was it that every time Calon remembered the past, a sharp sting pierced deep within his chest.
