Calon couldn’t figure out what to say to Ael, who was staring at him with indifferent eyes.

After standing there blankly for a long while, he finally hurriedly bowed just as Ael turned away, as if she had already received his greeting.

“…Good morning.”

Good morning? Even to himself, it sounded absurd. Could the word “good” possibly pass between him and Ael right now?

But he had nothing else to say. He didn’t even dare utter Ael’s name—only the set greeting came out.

Perhaps Ael found it ridiculous too. Without a word or gesture acknowledging his greeting, she simply turned and looked out toward the sea.

From that gesture, Calon could clearly read Ael’s resolve: she had no desire to exchange another word with him.

His mouth felt parched, so Calon clenched his fists pointlessly.

In the past, he would have walked over without hesitation and taken Ael’s hand. And she, unsurprised, would have smiled as if to say, “I knew it was you.” Back then…

But then Calon realized something: the image of Ael smiling in his memory had faded terribly.

‘When… was the last time?’

The last time he’d held her hand—when she hadn’t been startled, hadn’t been afraid, hadn’t cried—but had simply smiled and comfortably clasped his hand as if it were only natural… He couldn’t remember when that had been.

Because it had been far too long ago.

While Calon stood still, Ael walked over to the wooden chair placed in front of the house and sat down.

It was a new chair, set exactly where the old, decaying one had once stood.
