“This clearly shows that the land in that region belongs to our family! Therefore, you must rightfully pay us the amount and draft the proper documents!”

They thrust forward a document, written in handwriting so illegible one couldn’t tell which way was up or down, insisting the land was theirs.

Nisha, Ino, and the other employees of the Ash Trading Company were generally fluent in foreign languages—but not in the ancient tongue.

It was a language nearly extinct across the continent, now used only in a few ancient northern kingdoms, including the Kingdom of Denertum. Even those kingdoms had adopted the continent’s common tongue as their primary language, relegating the ancient language to a secondary role.

Thus, from the Ash Trading Company’s perspective, spending time learning other languages proved far more beneficial than studying the ancient one. Calon was no exception; among the twelve languages he spoke fluently, the ancient tongue was not included.

The nobles’ documents were composed in the most atrocious script among ancient texts, filled with unnecessary ornate phrases praising their family’s glory, and deliberately twisted mid-sentence so that only a skilled reader could infer the intended meaning.

The Ash Trading Company urgently sought a more capable expert in the ancient language.

However, they soon learned that only nobles who had received elite education from childhood could decipher such documents—and even among nobles, such individuals were exceedingly rare.

Moreover, since the matter involved noble estates, professors from Denertum Academy flatly refused the Ash Trading Company’s request for consultation, making it clear they wanted no part in the affair.

Their refusal was laced with resentment—partly because they didn’t wish to sour relations with noble families they knew personally, and partly because they took offense at the idea that a mere imperial commoner would dare try to hire them, nobles and esteemed academy professors, with money.

‘But we can’t just give up on finding someone.’
