A hot, sticky liquid splashed onto my face. At the same time, a strong metallic stench filled the air.

Drip. Drip.

Ael froze momentarily, staring only at the trembling blade before her eyes as blood droplets fell onto her face.

The silence lasted only a moment. In the next instant, the man who had blocked the knife kicked the attacking academy staff member away, and at the same time, Jena, who had been standing farther off, screamed.

“Miss! Sir Calon!”

Sir Calon? Did Jena know him?

Hearing Jena’s cry, Ael—despite the chaos—felt a flicker of confusion and turned to look at the man who had just saved her.

He was someone she remembered. The man who had recently delivered a coded message from Lasis.

She’d only glimpsed him briefly, yet he’d left a strong impression. Still, she hadn’t paid him much further attention. He seemed like someone who would no longer have anything to do with her, and for some reason, she’d felt she shouldn’t keep speaking with him.

Fortunately, by the time she’d refocused on the cipher, he’d already left, and when she thought of him again, the spot where he’d stood was empty.

Under other circumstances, she wouldn’t have given him another thought, yet strangely, his image kept returning to her mind until she fell asleep.

It was odd. Why would a complete stranger, someone she’d never seen before, linger so vividly in her thoughts?

‘Maybe I should’ve asked his name.’

She ended up chuckling softly at the thought.
