Tessa shook the paper in her hand even more fiercely.

When Lasis tried to take it, Calon reached out first and snatched it away.

Lasis glared at him with a look that clearly asked, “Why are you taking it?” Calon answered while gazing past his shoulder.

“I’m sure you know this is urgent, so go call Ael quickly.”

He could see Ael.

From the moment he realized this fact, his heart fluttered.

He had inspected the house on the hill to create a reason to contact Ael, but all he had brought out were useless odds and ends—things hardly worth calling her over for.

Shabby items that no one would bother picking up even if left on the street.

Among them, what silenced Calon was a single set of clothes.

The sleeves were frayed from being worn so often and for so long.

Though patches here and there covered the worn spots, the fabric had thinned so much from repeated use that it seemed this was the only clothing the owner possessed.

In contrast, the expensive garments hanging deep inside the wardrobe showed almost no signs of ever having been worn.

Those were the clothes sent weekly to the hillside house on his orders—the very outfits Ael had worn whenever she visited his bedroom.

Seeing them hanging there, pristine as if they held no purpose beyond those visits to see him, left a gritty, unpleasant taste in his mouth, as if he’d bitten into sand.

He couldn’t find any suitable item within the Altvea mansion that could serve as an excuse either.
