Ael wandered through the night streets.

It had been less than a year since she last walked this street, yet the area around Ash Company had changed dramatically.

Back when I used to come and go through here for work, even though there were many passersby, I always felt uneasy once night fell.

In the shadowy alleys, people with eyes as chilling as the darkness moved about, and raucous voices spilled from noisy taverns, accompanied by the sickeningly strong stench of liquor and vulgar laughter.

The atmosphere was certainly never pleasant, so whenever Ael returned home, the company carriage carrying her would always speed quickly through this street.

The wharf, once piled high with old, rotting fishing nets reeking of decay, had not only been tidied up neatly but was now adorned with pretty flowerpots.

The tavern where half-naked women once worked had vanished entirely, its place now taken by a small park.

The park was filled with people chatting and families enjoying strolls.

Even vendors selling snacks lined one side, watching children run about laughing.

I once read a travelogue about the Empire.

Its author had especially praised the imperial port, claiming it was the place where the landscapes of the Empire and Denerthum differed most greatly.

A place completely free of danger, where people could stroll anytime, gaze at ships sailing toward the distant sea, and dream of a brighter, wealthier future.

Now, Denerthum’s port looked exactly like the imperial port described in that travelogue.
