On the side table lay the painting that Countess Hebrides had once given as a gift.

The very painting Count Hebrides had handed to me just before leaving, without explaining what it was.

I had left it behind at the viscount’s estate, and it had weighed heavily on my mind until I finally asked Calon if there might be any way to retrieve it again.

He told me not to worry, and a few days later, he gave it to Ael.

The frame’s edge was slightly warped, as if it had been thrown down at some point, but thankfully the painting itself showed no major damage.

How overjoyed I had been the day it returned.

After that, the painting remained in my room—until news arrived that the Imperial Princess was coming, and servants suddenly burst in to pack everything away. From that moment on, the painting vanished.

I’d asked Calon through the Head Maid if I could get it back, but his reply was simply that everything was safely stored and there was no need to worry.

I’d been heartbroken, thinking it was lost forever.

“It’s back.”

Ael reached out and pulled the painting toward herself.

Her hands, filled with joy, gently caressed the painting and its frame again and again. After a long while of examining it, unsure what to do, Ael finally embraced it tightly and closed her eyes.

She remembered a beautiful place she hadn’t thought of in a long time.

The cloudless azure sky, the sun shining brightly from high above, the sea sparkling as it held that light, and even the salty wind blowing recklessly all around.

The old wooden door that creaked with every gust of wind, the stairs she’d climbed carefully, the small rooms still bearing traces of those who once lived there.
