Calon silently gazed at the room where servants bustled about.

The place he was looking at had been Ael’s room.

From the wallpaper and curtains to every single piece of furniture inside, he had personally selected everything to match Ael’s tastes and had the space newly arranged.

As time passed and Ael brought in more of her belongings, the room had gradually grown warmer and cozier.

But now, nothing remained in this room that Calon remembered.

The wallpaper had changed color, the curtains were replaced entirely with different fabric, and the furniture—needless to say—was completely different.

All the old, cherished antique furniture that Ael had especially loved had vanished, replaced by dark, heavy wooden pieces characteristic of the Ailgis Kingdom.

In place of comfort, only oppressive authority and intimidation lingered.

Feeling stifled, Calon absentmindedly fiddled with the buttons of his shirt.

Ael’s former room had been perfectly transformed to suit Princess Niare’s preferences.

People seeing the completely altered room would surely assume Calon Ash was going to great lengths to welcome Princess Niare.

Calon recalled the conditions the princess had put forward.

Princess Niare was the type of person who would stop at nothing to obtain what she wanted.

She had nearly secured the position of head of the Ash Trading Company once before but lost it at the last moment; now, to reclaim it, she had proposed utterly outrageous and unprecedented terms.

When Calon saw the number of customs duties and other demands she had published in the newspaper, even he—who rarely found anything astonishing—couldn’t help but let out a hollow laugh.
