Thwack!

The book thrown with all her might flew, and the fleeing man was struck on the back of his head by its corner. The staggering man turned his head. The moment their eyes met, Aelfrie stumbled back in shock.

It was because the man had glared at her coldly.

“You were with the merchant!”

He spat out incomprehensible words and turned his body, charging at Aelfrie. Suddenly, a sharp dagger was in the man’s hand.

“……!”

In the sudden situation, Aelfrie froze solid, unable to even scream. She had thought it might be dangerous, but she never expected to face a knife in broad daylight.

She couldn’t believe the shining dagger in the charging man’s hand. An attack like this, in the city, and in the central square at that!

Aelfrie braced herself for the impending pain and tightly closed her eyes.

Thwack!

At that moment, she heard a dull sound. Instead of the anticipated pain, dustladen wind and unfamiliar warmth covered Aelfrie.

“……?”

In the unexpected situation, Aelfrie quickly opened her eyes. Something was blocking her view. What was it?

Aelfrie slowly lifted her head.

Her gaze met blue eyes. At that moment, Aelfrie forgot even the rudeness of the situation and stared blankly at him.

He was a man she’d never seen before. Black hair, slightly tinged with brown in the sunlight. Dark, straight eyebrows. And below them, sparkling blue eyes.

He was a man whose appearance was altogether refreshing.

Aelfrie momentarily forgot the situation and thought to herself, ‘He’s really handsome.’

“Are you all right?”

A clear, low voice resonated in her ear. Aelfrie then suddenly realized her current state and hastily pushed the man away.

Fortunately, the man immediately stepped back at Aelfrie’s gesture. Then she saw the vagabond who had fallen behind the man. What did he do to him?

The vagabond was lying down, clutching his wrist and groaning in pain, and the dagger he had held was lying a few steps away.

“This bastard!”

“Grab him! Hold him down!”

Soon the woman who had cried for help and the men who seemed to be her companions rushed over and seized the fallen man.

People who had previously pretended not to notice, now either came closer to help or still stood a step away, gawking.

‘Did I almost die……?’

Coming to her senses amidst the commotion, Aelfrie looked at the dagger on the ground. Its blade gleamed blue as it caught the sunlight.

She realized just how much danger she’d been in.

“Ah…….”

With her shock, she felt the pain in her injured part. Aelfrie groaned and swayed. She might have collapsed right then, but a large hand grabbed Aelfrie’s arm.

It was the man who had embraced her earlier, who had now come back to support her.

“I apologize for grabbing you like that. Are you really all right?”

“I’m, I’m, I’m fine.”

A totally unconvincing voice escaped her lips. Delayed terror caused her teeth to chatter and her body to tremble.

The man did not let go of her hand but continued to hold her until she calmed down.

A while later, the man who had attacked was dragged away by people, and the woman who had cried for help approached Aelfrie.

“Thank you so much. Thanks to you, we caught that bastard!”

Her clothes were quite colorful, but her speech was far from the snobbish tone of the aristocrats. Aelfrie then detected a strange accent in the woman’s words.

“An imperial……?”

“Yes. I’m an imperial. To be more precise, I’m Nisha, the branch manager of Ash Merchant Company’s Denerthum branch. And the person who kicked that guy away is…….”

The woman stumbled over her introduction when she looked at the man supporting Aelfrie. The man gave a knowing smile and introduced himself to Aelfrie.

“I also work for the Ash Merchant Company. My name is Kyle.”

“Ah, yes. Thathank you, Kyle. But I’m fine now, you can let go of my hand……”

At Aelfrie’s words, Kyle slowly let go of her arm.

When the warmth that had been on her arm disappeared, Aelfrie felt a strange sense of loss and found herself absentmindedly rubbing the arm he had held.
Could it be that his action stemmed from discomfort? Kyle bowed his head a little more to apologize.

“I’m sorry. I held on to you too long, thinking you might collapse.”

“No! I’m the one who should thank you. I almost died.”

At the gentleman’s apology, Aelfrie bowed her head even more instead. Then suddenly, she realized. The envelope containing the letter she had been holding was missing.

“The letter!”

Aelfrie hurriedly turned her body to search the floor. On the ground where people had been dragging the vagabond away earlier, a crumpled paper envelope appeared, covered in footprints.

Aelfrie hurriedly approached the envelope. Her seemingly injured ankle ached, but such pain was not important now.

Aelfrie’s hand trembled as she bent over with difficulty to pick up the envelope.

The state of the envelope was pitiful. Nevertheless, Aelfrie did not abandon hope and carefully opened the paper envelope.

“Ah…….”

But the moment she took out the letter inside, the remaining hope turned into a sigh.

The woman snatched his phone and hung up. Looking at his phone wallpaper, she awkwardly changed the subject: “An ancient painting, eh? It looks pretty good, it’s just that the person in the painting looks a bit like me.”

When he heard this, he sarcastically mocked her for being so delusional, completely unaware that, the person in front of him was the reincarnation of Wen Ru, the famous prime minister of Yuan Shun whom he most admired…
