The carriage sped coolly down the street.

Edric was in a good mood.

The smooth surface of the running road felt pleasant, and the gusts of wind rushing in through the open windows on both sides were refreshingly vigorous.

But what pleased him most of all was the fact that the worry that had plagued him for the past few days had been resolved all at once.

Fortunately, Rosaline had made her decision right on the spot.

“I’ll be the one who breaks things off with you. And I suppose I can even make up a reason for it?”

“Of course. Please fabricate whatever you like.”

Thus, their engagement was officially dissolved on the spot, each receiving a copy of the written annulment bearing both their signatures.

In truth, breaking off the engagement with Rosaline hadn’t even been a proper dilemma—it had simply required a moment of resolve.

The real problem lay elsewhere.

“Melie Enwood.”

She was the greatest source of Edric’s worries.

Until now, the feelings he’d held for Melie had been nothing more than friendship, familial affection, or… deep trust.

Of course, it would have been a lie to say he’d never once viewed her as a woman.

During his turbulent youth, she had stayed by his side and played a significant role in straightening out his warped mindset. For a brief time then, he had indeed liked her.
