His turned eyes were cold and sharp. Placing the ball on his fingertip, he lightly spun it with a flick of his wrist and continued speaking.

“A person should know when to quit while they’re ahead.”

“If you don’t understand that, I’ll teach you myself.”

Staring at the ball spinning like a top on his fingertip, the child gulped.

Instinctively, the child sensed it.

He might not know whether this man was truly as remarkable as his father claimed—but he was certainly frightening.

Trembling uncontrollably, the child tried to run away.

“Say your greetings.”

Edric’s voice halted the child just as he turned to flee.

Immediately, the child—who had never yielded even to scoldings from parents or teachers—suddenly turned meek and bowed deeply.

“G-goodbye, then.”

Edric flicked the ball lightly from his fingertip back to the child. Clutching the ball that landed perfectly in his hands, the child stood bewildered for a moment before turning again and walking away docilely.

He felt an eerie chill—if he ran, the man would surely grab him by the collar.

Once the child had disappeared into the distance, Edric also began walking—but instead of returning to the shop, he headed down the alley leading to the backyard.
