“You’ve returned, my lady.”

Rena, the maid, greeted Melly politely as she returned from the salon and extended her hand.

“Please give that to me. I’ll carry it.”

“No, it’s alright.”

Melly hugged the rectangular canvas she was holding close to her chest. Then she hurried up the stairs so Rena couldn’t follow.

Back in her chambers, she leaned against the door and caught her breath. Then she removed the cover from the painting she was holding.

A few lines of different colors and thicknesses drawn along the border on a blue background. And in the center, now finally visible, a single elongated velvet rectangle.

Melly looked up.

Beyond the canvas, she could see the wine-colored velvet chaise lounge. It was the very place where the incident that became the turning point of her life five years ago had occurred…

Melly approached the fireplace. Then she threw the painting behind the screen without hesitation.

The fireplace flames momentarily faltered at the sudden appearance of the large kindling. But the embers stubbornly survived and soon began to burn, leaving black soot on the painting.

Melly saw the artist’s name in the burning corner of the canvas.

[Elio Rosenheide.]

It was a suitable name to use as an excuse that people wouldn’t recognize even if told, claiming to have been born and raised abroad.

‘But I know who you are.’

Francis Adel. Or Francis something.

Melly had heard somewhere that the man had abandoned his position as heir to the Adel viscounty a few years ago.

Though she hadn’t paid much attention as she wasn’t interested, she had sincerely hoped that since he was intelligent and talented, he wouldn’t go hungry.

But at this moment, Melly hated herself so much that her past self seemed cursed.

When would her diary disappear from that man’s mind?

‘When I get bored of it.’

Melly could vividly imagine him saying that with a mischievous smile.

“Sigh…”

Melly sighed as she watched the painting crackle and burn in the firewood.

Now the painting’s form had almost disappeared, and only blackened paper was crumbling in the flames. Just like the diary that had vanished long ago, it was fading away…

Where could the diary have gone? Had God taken it away, thinking it was no longer needed?

She couldn’t even show it to the person she really wanted to show it to, yet some stranger was still mocking her with it.

This is all because of that gathering.

She shouldn’t go to that gathering anymore.

[This is the timeline separator]

But the next evening, Melly had to retract that decision.

“What happened?”

After returning from the imperial palace, Edric, who was expected to rest as usual, visited Melly’s chambers and said,

“Did you really guess the meaning of the abstract painting at the Andert marquis’s salon in one try?”

His tone was also disbelieving, but his eyes didn’t sharpen.

Because he had already confirmed it was true after hearing it from several people.

Melly read the approval he was showing her for the first time in a long while on Edric’s face.

Therefore, she couldn’t tell him the truth about Francis.

“It was just… a coincidence.”

That was the best she could say.

Instead of saying ‘Even coincidence is a skill,’ Edric lightly patted the seat beside him.

It meant for her to come over.

Melly got up from her seat and moved to his side. To that very rectangular velvet chaise lounge that occupied the center of Francis’s painting.

“Well done.”

Edric stroked Melly’s hair with a subtle touch.

“Whether it was coincidence or not, you did well.”

He said just that, without prying into anything. Melly was deeply relieved by that fact.

Edric’s hand, which had been stroking her hair, slowly moved to caress her neckline.

His gaze became more profound, and his lips parted seductively.

‘You look so beautiful today.’

His moist eyes seemed to say so.

He wanted her at this moment. And Melly was also ready to make love with him. Though it was a bit sudden.

Their bodies, which had been bound by a sense of duty, were naturally coming together in a sensual atmosphere for the first time in a very long time.

He caressed her legs with delicate movements. Melly felt a dizzying sensation as if her blood vessels were swelling.

Just when she could no longer contain the moans that kept escaping even when she covered her mouth.

“Melly.”

Edric whispered, blowing hot breath into her ear.

“You’ll continue to do well in the future, won’t you?”

“…”

“You’ll make sure coincidence doesn’t remain just coincidence, right?”

The heated passion, the sensual voice, the affectionate touch she felt after so long, and her hazy consciousness.

There was no reason for Melly not to nod.

“Yes…”

“That’s right, that’s how it should be.”

Edric rewarded her with the face of a languid ruler.

An intense heat filled the room.

She heard the curse-laden moans escaping from Edric’s teeth.

It was evidence that he had lost his reason.

Melly hugged him tightly and said,

“I love you. I love you, Edric.”

She confessed with every trembling sensation.

But Edric, who shared the pleasure with her, never once spoke of love.

He didn’t even say ‘Me too.’

He merely moaned, caressed, and poured himself out.

[This is the timeline separator]

Leaving Melly sprawled out like a rag doll after their repeated encounters, Edric came outside. She would likely continue sleeping for a while, having practically passed out from exhaustion.

Edric’s appearance was impeccable, unlike someone who had just been rolling around in bed. Only the sweat-soaked broad chest visible through the front of his navy blue silk robe remained as evidence of their passionate moments.

‘I love you, Edric.’

The confession she had burst out with along with her moans still echoed in Edric’s ears as he walked down the corridor.

He had bitten his lips so hard to avoid agreeing with those words that he could taste the metallic flavor of blood on the tip of his tongue.

He had never once told Melly that he loved her.

Initially, he hadn’t intended to withhold it for this long.

He had only meant to refrain from saying it at first, just to keep her on her toes.

Knowing all too well that the one who loves more is the weaker party in such a relationship, he had only wanted to give the impression that he loved her less than she loved him.

But as he continued not saying it, at some point it began to feel awkward to utter those words.

And upon further reflection, it seemed there was no need to speak of love.

Wasn’t there no problem between them even without such words?

Melly still loved him. She had no complaints about feeling that she loved more, and was even trying harder to be good to him.

Edric felt a deep sense of stability in this relationship.

He didn’t want to unnecessarily shake and confuse the foundation of their relationship that had been built over the past five years.

Surely, physical intimacy like today would be enough to make up for any lack of affectionate expressions.

And in any case, the one who holds the upper hand in a relationship would likely find it easier to dominate the other party than not. Like now.

‘You’ll continue to do well in the future, won’t you?’

‘Yes, I will.’

He had elicited obedience from Melly. And voluntary obedience at that.

Lovely Melly.

She didn’t know.

‘I can’t do it. I don’t want to go to those tedious ladies’ salons anymore.’

Even if she had said that during their intimate moment, he wouldn’t have been able to force her to do anything.

By that point, Edric’s reason was already paralyzed, and he would have done anything she asked.

If she had asked him to say he loved her, he would have said it; if she had told him to serve her as his mistress, he would have agreed to do so.

But the ever-so-kind Melly didn’t ask for anything. Therefore, Edric still held the key to their relationship.

He would continue to have the initiative in the future.

Unless there was a variable.

‘A variable… There’s no way such a thing could exist.’

A satisfied smile spread across Edric’s face as he returned to his chambers and took a sip of refreshing beer.

[This is the timeline separator]

As she sat up, the blanket slid down her upper body.

A neatly folded robe was placed on the bedside table shelf, but Melly didn’t dare move towards it.

Her strength had been completely drained by the passionate time they had after so long.

Her legs wouldn’t cooperate properly.

“Ugh…”

Melly, who had attempted to take a step, only felt a dull ache and flopped back down.

It had been an incredible night, the likes of which might only have occurred in early newlywed days.

She had lost her senses after feeling dizzy from the kiss that gently caressed the inside of her mouth.

Her memories weren’t continuous and kept cutting off. As if she had been drinking. And the things she did remember were all so embarrassing that she wanted to crawl back under the covers.

It felt like her own gasps that had echoed in the dark space were coming back to her as an echo.

Melly anxiously bit her lip and thought.

I wonder if anyone heard? The sounds were so loud.

If they heard, what would they think of me?

Would they think I was a cat in heat when they thought I was quiet and well-behaved?

Knock knock−.

At the sudden knock, Melly gasped and pulled the blanket up to her chin.

Oz entered carrying neatly folded laundry.

“My lady, are you awake?”

“Mm-hmm…”

Melly carefully examined Oz’s face.

She wondered if the way she looked at her had changed.

“What’s wrong? Are you cold? Should I stoke the fireplace some more?”

Fortunately, her attitude hadn’t changed. She was only worried about her lady, who had become one with the blanket, her face flushed.

“No, it’s fine. Instead, could you bring my meal here?”

It didn’t seem like she would be able to get up for a while.

“Of course.”

“And one more thing.”

Melly made one more request to Oz, who was about to turn around.

“Could you go to the library and bring me all the books on art history?”

“Art history?”

Oz wore a puzzled expression. It was a natural reaction for her. After all, Melly had said she would never go to that salon again after attending the evening before last.

“It seems I’ll have to keep attending the Andert marquis’s salon. I think it would be good to study in advance.”

Melly said with an embarrassed face.

‘You’ll continue to do well in the future, won’t you?’

She had unintentionally agreed under Edric’s passionate gestures, so she had no choice.

She had to turn coincidence into inevitability.
