Mi Joo looked past Yeon Ju’s shoulder—still clinging to her—and toward Si Yoon.

“Chae Yeon Ju. Choi Mi Joo. Our family names are different, aren’t they?”

At those words, Yeon Ju lowered her arms that had been hugging Mi Joo and looked at her.

“My older sister’s name is Chae Mi Joo—not Choi Mi Joo.”

Mi Joo, disbelieving, looked back and forth between Si Yoon and Yeon Ju. In the brief moment that Mi Joo and Yeon Ju parted, Si Yoon quickly pulled Mi Joo into his arms and patted her tenderly, as if proud of her.

“A three-year-old child is so clever—she even knows her own name well.”

Si Yoon imagined little Mi Joo struggling to hold up three fingers and pronouncing her name in a babyish voice:

“Chae. Mi. Joo.”

“But I think the people who heard it and wrote it down mistakenly recorded it as ‘Choi Mi Joo.’”

Right. Mi Joo remembered her own name clearly enough, but at only three years old, she hadn’t been able to write it herself.

Wriggling out of Si Yoon’s suffocating embrace, she turned again to look at Yeon Ju, who claimed to be her younger sister. Could that tearful person really be my sister?

‘How strange. When I met that fake father, tears came—but why aren’t they coming now that I’ve found my real sister?’

This whole situation felt like a dream to Mi Joo. She had to verify it, if only to wake herself from this dream.

Staring intently at Yeon Ju’s face, Mi Joo searched carefully for any resemblance. As she did, tears gradually began to flow from her own eyes as well.

Watching the two sisters gently stroke and touch each other’s faces, Si Yoon smiled softly. They looked identical—who wouldn’t recognize them as sisters? Why couldn’t Mi Joo see it?
