When a spark suddenly flew to me, Cedar’s face contorted fiercely as he snatched Lady Briar’s wrist.

“Mother!”

At the rough action, Lady Briar’s eyes widened. And fluttering her long eyelashes as if in disbelief, she asked.

“Did you just grab my wrist? Because of your wife?”

“Yes, I did. Don’t take out your frustration on my wife over our issues.”

“I felt it at the ball too, you really seem to love your wife. Then all the more reason not to be so stubborn now. You have a wife now, and you’ll likely have children too, shouldn’t you proudly inherit the duke title?”

At the mention of children, I reflexively covered my belly with both hands.

Children, something I had never thought about in my entire life.

‘That’s right. Now that I’m married, I could have children too.’

I hunched my shoulders at the thought of a presence I hadn’t considered, and Lady Briar’s eyes flashed for a moment.

She changed the direction of her appeal, with tears welling up in her eyes.

“You may have given up the duke title by your own will, but what about your child? That child could have become the Duke of Granite, but is being robbed of it because of you. Are you planning to be inadequate parents?”

People can readily answer when it’s their own loss, but when it becomes someone else’s loss, they tend to be at a loss for words.

Cedar’s face hardened, as if he hadn’t considered the title and wealth his own child would lose.

However, he cut off his mother’s words coldly without wavering.

“Don’t use a child that doesn’t even exist yet as leverage.”

“Cedar, think about how desperate this mother must be to say such things. Please. You’re all I have.”

“Don’t you have Father?”

“Cedar!”

As Cedar didn’t budge no matter who she persisted with, Lady Briar’s face hardened as well.

Cedar released Lady Briar’s wrist and said coldly.

“As long as you say strange things to my wife, I have no intention of meeting you, Mother. Please leave.”

Even though Cedar cut her off so coldly, Lady Briar clung to him persistently.

“It’s this mother’s last wish. Please inherit the duke title. All you need to do now is nod your head.”

“Can you not hear me telling you to leave?”

That scene looked excessively anxious to my eyes. I tilted my head.

‘Didn’t the Duke already say he would pass on the title to Cedar? Then why is she so anxious? If only Cedar’s decision remains, isn’t clinging like this rather counterproductive?’

I couldn’t understand it in many ways.

It was also awkward how she suddenly got angry at me earlier, as if testing Cedar’s affection for me.

‘Just like someone who can’t control their emotions because they’re too anxious.’

I tilted my head.

“Is there a reason you need to answer right now?”

Lady Briar’s gaze, who had been arguing with Cedar, turned towards me.

Regardless of her personality, she was breathtakingly beautiful.

In her eyes, brimming with tears as if bubbles were rising from the sea, all kinds of emotions were swirling.

Anxiety, impatience, urgency, and so on. I didn’t know what the story was, but it was clear that my question had hit the mark.

‘There must be a reason why Cedar needs to inherit the duke title as soon as possible.’

As I faced her, a faint sense of familiarity tickled my nerves.

Startled, I opened my eyes wide.

Before I could bring it up, Cedar stepped in front of me, cutting off our conversation.

“There’s no need to ask, Nelly. I won’t inherit the duke title.”

Lady Briar, who had tried to coax and soothe Cedar with kind words and a pitiful appearance, finally exploded.

“Why do you hate it so much! Your father said he would pass it on to you!”

“Mother, you should stop too. What does Father’s heart matter? I’ve decided by my own will not to inherit it. Isn’t it your selfishness to keep forcing what I don’t want?”

“Selfishness! There are no parents who don’t prioritize their children in their children’s matters!”

The circular conversation was giving me a headache.

Cedar knew that no matter what he said, she would keep responding like that, so he sighed and swallowed his rebuttal deep in his throat.

Thinking that action meant his heart was wavering at her words, Lady Briar once again appealed to Cedar in a gentle and desperate tone.

“Cedar, my love for you is sincere. Everything I say is entirely for your sake. Even if it sometimes displeases you and sounds burdensome to you.”

“……”

And when Cedar said nothing, she reached out and grabbed my hand, this time appealing to me.

“Nelly, you understand my feelings, don’t you?”

“Mother!”

Cedar angrily stepped between Lady Briar and me.

Although the time I was held by her hand was only for a moment because of that, it was enough time to feel that familiar sensation I had felt earlier.

I looked at Lady Briar with wide eyes and asked.

“……Are you a magician?”

“What?”

“You used magic just now, didn’t you? Right?”

At my question, Lady Briar’s face turned bright red. She answered me in a sharp tone.

“That’s impossible! If I were a magician, I wouldn’t have needed to make so much effort to protect my son.”

“But what I feel from you is the energy of magic? Although it’s faint……”

It was a clear magical energy, though not very strong.

Having spent more than half my life immersed in magic, there was no way I could have felt it wrong.

Could there be cases where traces of magic use remain for someone who isn’t a magician? That was an even worse case than her being a magician herself.

I added in an urgent tone.

“Maybe there’s a curse on something you’re carrying that you don’t know about! If I scan it more closely……”

Slap!

It was when I tried to grab Lady Briar’s hand again to find out where the magical energy I felt from her originated.

This time, Lady Briar violently slapped my hand away.

“……Lady Briar?”

It was awkward how she had eagerly grabbed my hand earlier, but now roughly refused contact.

Lady Briar’s large eyes shook violently back and forth.

She stepped back as if fleeing, not knowing what to do.

“I, I must have surprised you by coming suddenly. I’ll be going now.”

And she fled to the entrance so quickly that Cedar had no chance to stop her.

She didn’t leave when told to go, but now? It was just bewildering how different her behavior was from when she came in and clung to us.

Blinking my eyes and staring blankly at where she had been, I turned to Cedar with an awkward smile.

“She left? I wonder if she had some urgent business?”

“……”

Cedar seemed just as perplexed, as he remained silent with his lips tightly pressed together.

I sighed. And I tugged on Cedar’s sleeve.

“Let’s sit down for now. My legs hurt from standing for so long.”

Cedar obediently followed as I led him.

We sat side by side on the nearest reception room sofa. As the silence was awkward, I laughed hesitantly and spoke first.

“She came like a storm, but left even more surprisingly.”

“……I’m sorry.”

“No, I didn’t say that to receive an apology. Don’t apologize.”

“Still.”

Cedar rubbed his face with his palm, seeming very troubled.

His contorted face looked only painful. I bit my lip.

‘It’s really okay.’

Rather, what worried me now was Cedar, not myself. But being poor with words, I couldn’t think of any proper words of comfort.

In the end, all I could do was hold his hand.

I quietly grasped Cedar’s hand.

His hand with protruding knuckles was hard like a wooden block, but warm.

As I stroked his cracked back of hand with my index finger, Cedar asked me in a heavy voice.

“What was that about magic earlier? That Mother is a magician?”

I answered honestly.

“I felt a faint trace of magical power from the lady. It’s the kind of trace felt from someone who has recently used magic or has magic cast on them.”

“Can you tell what kind of magic it is?”

“I’d need to examine it more closely to know. The contact was too brief, so anything I say now would just be speculation.”

“I see.”

Cedar answered calmly, without emotion. And he earnestly entreated me.

“If Mother comes, pretend you’re not here. Never meet her alone.”

“Alright.”

I vividly remembered that she had sent an assassin to kill me.

‘I shouldn’t be deceived by her beautiful and delicate appearance.’

But the gaze I briefly met earlier looked very anxious and precarious.

‘What on earth is making her so anxious?’

Given the situation, there seemed to be nothing to be anxious about.

Even after tilting my head and thinking about it this way and that, nothing came to mind.

Cedar, who had remained silent for a long time after earnestly entreating me, asked in a slow tone.

“……It wasn’t any dangerous magic or curse, was it?”

It seemed he couldn’t help but worry about his mother, even while pretending not to care and trying to remain calm.

I wanted to reassure him too, but all I could say was this.

“Well……”

Assuming she wasn’t a magician, if magical traces were felt from her, there was a high possibility it was not good magic.

‘It’s likely to be mental magic. Like brainwashing or memory manipulation.’

While the Academy strictly prohibits the use of such magic, there are many people in this world who don’t follow rules if it’s for their own benefit.

‘I should examine it more closely next time I have the chance.’

An Indifferent Woman is the One Men Desire the Most

One-line summary: The female lead is actually cold-hearted and extremely rational. She has stage-by-stage relationships and won’t two-time, but there will always be someone who secretly likes her.

This novel has the following triggers, so if you’re sensitive to these, please don’t read:

1. The female lead has had many relationships, but she treated each one seriously and broke up properly.

It’s just that the men unilaterally pestered her incessantly. For the female lead, when she doesn’t like someone anymore, she simply doesn’t like them.

(This applies to her relationships with Male Lead 1, 2, 3, and 4 as well, but she’s loyal in each 1-on-1 relationship!)

2. In this novel, Male Lead 2 and the female lead kiss in a car, and Male Lead 1 sees it and beats up Male Lead 2.

The female lead calls the police and sends both Male Lead 1 and 2 to the police station! Male Lead 1 begs the female lead not to break up with him.

3. Male Lead 1 has a gentle appearance but an obsessive personality.

Male Lead 2 has a delicate and soft appearance, slightly green tea-like (two-faced).

Male Lead 3 is a youthful college student and a smart person who has secretly liked the female lead for a long time.

Male Lead 4 is the female lead’s father’s special assistant, a business elite with deep, hidden thoughts.

4. At the beginning of this novel, the female lead has already broken up with Male Lead 1 (Chapter 4) and gotten back together with Male Lead 2 (ex-boyfriend).

5. Enter with caution if you have triggers!!!
