Wishing My Husband Dead - Chapter 34
After a brief moment, the door opened.
He was different from what Cordelia had imagined. He was neither a horned devil nor a three-eyed demon.
Maximilian was a handsome man with dark blonde hair and green eyes. His pleasant appearance made him look gentle and kind to anyone who saw him.
“I heard you called for me.”
“Oh, yes. Maximilian. Come in. There’s someone here you’ll be glad to see.”
“It seems to be someone I’m meeting for the first time.”
Maximilian greeted Cordelia with a slight nod of his eyes as he walked towards her. Cordelia noticed that his gait was subtly unusual.
“Hello. I’m Maximilian Atilei. And you are, my lady?”
“Cordelia, Cordelia Abrams.”
She took a deep breath before uttering her name.
“Abrams. The domain located in the northeast of Ershe. A place rich in iron ore, isn’t it?”
“…That’s right.”
It was a first. Someone who knew exactly where Abrams was located. Just that alone sent chills down Cordelia’s spine.
“Menufio said I would be glad to see this person, but I’m sorry to say I don’t know you well, my lady.”
He appeared so polite and gentle that it was hard to believe he was Leonard’s brother.
That made him even more frightening. To think that with that face, he had desecrated his mother’s remains and stabbed his own brother to death.
“Maximilian. Don’t be surprised. She is Leonard’s disciple, they say.”
“Brother’s disciple? Brother left a disciple behind?”
“Yes. Haha. It seems that rascal left some contingency plan before he died.”
“Brother always surprised us.”
He smiled gently while gazing at Cordelia. Instinctively, Cordelia turned her gaze away to avoid eye contact. Maximilian spoke to her in a kind tone.
“If you don’t mind, may I see your seal?”
“My seal?”
“Yes. It’s not that I doubt you, but it’s better to be certain in front of the Seirius.”
“I don’t mind, but…”
“Is there a problem?”
“I don’t know how to show the seal.”
A brief silence fell over the room at Cordelia’s words. One of the Seirius let out a groan.
“Oh, my head. We’re about to seat someone who can’t even manifest a seal in the Seirius.”
“Tsk tsk. Never mind. Maximilian, help her out.”
“Yes. Then, excuse me.”
He very politely placed one finger on Cordelia’s wrist. It felt like a butterfly had landed, with no sensation at all.
Soon after, just as Rosenblur had done at the entrance, the seal engraved on her body began to glow.
The other Seirius members showed no particular reaction to this, but Maximilian was different.
His eyes shone brightly as he looked at Cordelia, like a farmer who had found a treasure in his field.
“To think that Acheron’s official successor has appeared. This is a great blessing for the Mage Association.”
“Hmm. It’s of great significance that Atilei’s research won’t be lost. Although Abrams has only been learning magic for a year, she will lead Acheron as a Seirius. Help her as you helped your brother.”
“Of course. But only a year of learning magic? It seems brother took Abrams as a disciple in a hurry.”
“Yes. That’s a pity. But, well, it’s better than nothing at all.”
“Oh, Maximilian. Abrams wants to go to Atilei’s research lab, so please guide her there.”
“Ah, the research lab. I see. It’s as if you knew to come at just the right time. If you had been a day late, it would have been permanently closed.”
He spoke with a strangely regretful tone.
The other mages had already turned their attention away from Maximilian and Cordelia, too busy chattering among themselves to notice anything strange.
“Follow me. I’ll guide you to my brother’s research lab.”
“Th-thank you.”
Cordelia glanced around before following behind him. For now, getting out of this strange room was the priority. After that, she would have to find an opportunity to escape.
She fiddled with the ring on her finger.
Maximilian created a large rectangular door in the empty space, just as he had done when they first arrived, and pushed it open to move forward.
After blinking a few times, the scenery changed to a quiet corridor with no one around.
“How did you meet my brother?”
“Just, by chance.”
“There are no chances for mages. Only fate exists.”
“Then I suppose it was fate. Between me and my master.”
It was just a casual remark she made without much thought. Maximilian laughed silently.
“You resemble my brother.”
“Me?”
“Yes. Seeing you, Abrams, reminds me of my brother.”
The words to tell him to call her Cordelia comfortably didn’t come out. And she didn’t ask why seeing her reminded him of her master.
Cordelia walked tensely and noticed one thing.
Maximilian dragged his right foot on the floor when he walked. It wasn’t a simple injury, but it seemed he was born with one leg shorter than the other. It was certain when she saw him walking from behind.
“We’re here.”
“Oh, already?”
To think he would guide her to Leonard’s research lab so willingly. It made her excessive tension seem foolish.
“I received this key. With this…”
But surprisingly, the door of the research lab opened effortlessly with a light gesture from Maximilian. Cordelia opened her mouth in shock.
The Baron had clearly said that no one but her master could open it. How did he manage to open it?
“Shall we go in?”
Putting her doubts aside, she took a step inside. The scent of flowers greeted her first, brushing against her nose.
There were an enormous number of books, all neatly arranged. It was a bit surprising how normal the place seemed.
“Is this my master’s research lab?”
“No.”
“…Pardon?”
“It’s my research lab. I wanted to have a talk with you.”
No wonder he guided her so willingly. Cordelia, who had momentarily relaxed, tensed up again like a wary cat.
At that moment, a thin man in a white robe came rushing through the numerous bookshelves.
“You’ve arrived.”
“Charon. This is a guest. She claims to be my brother’s disciple.”
“What? Acheron’s Seirius left a disciple?”
“That’s what she says. It’s fortunate, isn’t it? I thought Acheron might be lost forever.”
“But he said he would never take a disciple…”
Charon stared intently at Cordelia. His gaze was so intense that Cordelia had to turn her face slightly to avoid it.
“Oh my. I’ve kept Abrams standing for too long. Charon.”
“Yes.”
“Could you prepare a meal?”
“A, a meal? What should I prepare?”
“Hmm. Since we don’t know our guest’s taste, how about lamb?”
Charon’s face immediately turned pale. He bit his lip and half-bowed his head.
“Well, the preparations are inadequate…”
“Ah, don’t worry. I bought some high-quality lamb recently and stored it.”
“…Y-yes. I understand. I’ll prepare it.”
Maximilian added cheerfully,
“Now, Abrams, just follow me.”
“I’m sorry, but I need to go to my master’s research lab. Let’s have the meal another time.”
She couldn’t be dragged along by him any further. Cordelia made a firm decision and took a step back.
Maximilian, who had been walking ahead, smiled lightly at her words.
“I’ll take you there. Just after we finish this meal.”
“No. Right now. I don’t have time.”
“Why don’t you have time? You’re going to live here until you die anyway.”
When he said ‘until you die,’ Maximilian slightly raised one corner of his mouth, visible only to Cordelia.
“My husband is waiting for me outside. So I need to go out.”
“Husband? You married early. Then Abrams isn’t your original surname. May I ask what your maiden name was?”
His manner of speech was polite, but his tone was not at all. It was forceful, as if speaking to a subordinate.
“It’s Vasquez.”
“Vasquez? You mean that Vasquez?”
“Is there anyone else in Ershe who can use that name?”
“I’m surprised. To think that my brother’s only disciple would be a Vasquez.”
“I’ve answered all your questions, so let me go now.”
“Hmm. You haven’t answered my last question yet.”
“Last question?”
Maximilian ignored Cordelia’s question and simply turned and walked away. Cordelia thought about running away even now and looked back. Charon, who had been standing behind, bowed his head awkwardly with a forced smile.
“I’ll prepare the meal shortly if you wait a moment.”
Cordelia asked Charon,
“Are you his servant?”
“Servant… No. I’m his disciple.”
“Then you must be a mage. Can you guide me to Leo- I mean, my master’s research lab?”
“Ah, I can’t. If I send a guest away on my own, I’ll be killed.”
Charon jumped up and tried to dissuade Cordelia. He strongly urged her to talk with Maximilian.
Cordelia looked alternately at the tightly closed door and where Maximilian had walked. Charon slightly blocked the door with his body and urged her.
“The master is waiting.”
“Alright.”
In the end, Cordelia had no choice but to turn her steps towards where Maximilian had gone.
Male lead Asks for a Divorce Every Day
It’s not often you come across a plot like this in the female-dominant genre — make sure to check it out!
This is a novel I’m planning to reread as well.
The male lead is strong, skilled in martial arts, and not the usual fragile type you often see in matriarchal novels.
Meanwhile, the female lead is a scientist—rational and logical. Even when she falls for the male lead, she doesn’t let her emotions cloud her decisions.
If you push through the first few chapters, you’ll gradually find the story really intriguing.
It has a mix of mystery, detective elements, and romance.
The author’s writing style is like crafting a puzzle—except they deliberately leave out a few pieces, making it hard to predict what happens next, yet keeping you hooked.
In the end, everything will come together and be explained.
One-sentence summary: Wife, stop playing with beakers and look at me!
In a laboratory accident, research scientist Zhu Wansheng accidentally travels to a matriarchal world. The original owner of the body is an eighteen-year-old only daughter of a wealthy rouge merchant, already married with a handsome young man.
Zhu Wansheng grins: Nice! She always said she was heaven’s favorite granddaughter. After a life of toil in her previous life, she can enjoy blessings in this one.
However, her joy lasts no more than three seconds as bad news arrives: the original owner’s family is about to go bankrupt, and her husband wants a divorce.
Even worse, she’s stuck with a research system full of restrictions.
Zhu Wansheng: ? Is this the destiny of a research dog?
——
Faced with this mess, Zhu Wansheng pours herself a bowl of wine to drown her sorrows. In her drunken haze, her husband arrives.
His figure is imposing, holding a long sword, with a dignified air that captivates Zhu Wansheng.
Gu Yingqing, however, looks at the alcohol-reeking Zhu Wansheng with undisguised disgust and coldly asks, “Divorce or not?” The intoxicated Zhu Wansheng mumbles vaguely, “I think… it’s not… it’s not… impossible!”
——
The next day, after sobering up, Zhu Wansheng is full of energy, rolling up her sleeves ready to make a big move. As for yesterday? She has no memory of it.
Zhu Wansheng is ambitious; a research dog fears nothing!
Upgrading rouge, extracting fragrances, producing perfumes, researching lipsticks… all shall bow to the power of modern technology!
The original owner’s dying rouge shop is revitalized. Her mother is pleased and with a wave of her hand, passes on the family business to her. As she takes control and her experimental results gain popularity, it’s the pinnacle of her life…
——
But there are always those who can’t stand to see her doing well. Jealousy, scheming, assassination attempts – they want nothing less than her life.
The person who has always kept his distance from her suddenly holds her tightly in his arms, eyes full of concern.
She is unharmed, but he falls into a pool of blood…
Zhu Wansheng feels guilty, “I can grant you one wish.”
Gu Yingqing tentatively circles his arms around her, carefully resting his head in the crook of her neck, pleading softly, “I regret it. Can we not divorce?”
Zhu Wansheng: ? When did I agree to a divorce?
[Small Theater]
The newly developed rouge is beautifully packaged, and Zhu Wansheng is eager to try it.
Gu Yingqing suddenly appears: “My lady, may I apply it for you?”
Cool fingertips lightly brush her lips. His Adam’s apple bobs as he leans in for a light bite.
Zhu Wansheng: ?
Gu Yingqing: It smells so good, I wanted to taste it…
On a warm spring day, Zhu Wansheng tries a new perfume: “Spring Night.” Gu Yingqing corners her against a wall.
Warm breath lingers on her neck.
“My lady, from now on, may I test the fragrances for you?”
