Mother’s tone when calling his name was far too tender to be merely that of a contractual relationship. Cordelia couldn’t suppress her curiosity and asked,

“Are demons and their contractors usually this close?”

Leonard and Candias didn’t seem particularly affectionate toward each other, but since Serbet was the only demon Cordelia knew, others might be different.

“Well… my relationship with Grita is rather special. Grita knows me—Hmm, how much do you actually know?”

Though the question was somewhat vague, Cordelia instantly understood what he was asking.

“All I know is that Mother originally had difficulty bearing children, so she made a contract with you to have me.”

“Then I suppose I should explain from the beginning.”

Serbet raised his pale, long finger and lightly flicked Cordelia’s forehead. The touch was as faint as a butterfly landing, yet Cordelia wobbled, unable to steady herself.

It didn’t hurt. Rather, it felt as if her insides had dropped like falling from a great height—an unfamiliar sensation that nearly made her scream.

When she regained her senses and looked ahead, the scenery had suddenly changed. Just moments ago, she’d been inside a room, but now she found herself in a forest.

Cordelia, bewildered, looked around. Fortunately, Serbet was visible a short distance away.

“Serbet…!”

She started running toward him but hesitated. Standing before Serbet was a trembling woman whose face looked strangely familiar.

“H-h-hic! It’s—it’s really a demon! Hic! I’ve summoned a demon!”

“How surprising. You’re just a little brat, barely more than a shadow, yet you managed to call me forth. How old are you?”
