Jared mocked their posturing, thinking they were bluffing.

“Clearly brainless, still unable to grasp the situation. Bring that man to me now!”

“Wait!”

In the swiftly escalating situation, Baron Lancaster bravely stood up.

“Isn’t this a deviation from the plan? Forcibly seizing the earldom means nothing if the council doesn’t approve. Why do this, knowing it better than anyone?”

“Haha, it won’t matter if no one finds out.”

“Too noisy.”

Belucci stood up, effortlessly drawing his sword. Jared’s knights tensed up, swords at the ready.

“Annoying to deal with each one, so come at me all at once.”

Belucci’s nonchalant demeanor was laced with blatant disdain. The knights hesitated, then attacked together on Jared’s order.

“Yah!”

“Ugh!”

“Next.”

In a blink, two knights were down.

Despite being visibly bigger and taller than Jared’s knights, Belucci moved too swiftly to be seen.

The remaining knights faltered at the apparent skill gap. Noticing their hesitation, Jared bellowed.

“What are you doing! Kill them now!”

The apparent leader charged with a battle cry, followed by others.

Unsurprisingly, the fight was brief. With a few swift strokes, the knights lay on the ground, groaning.

Some were dismembered, blood splattered everywhere. A young servant retched in the corner, unable to hold back.

Helena and Arnold’s faces turned ashen.

“Don’t come near me! Stay back!”

Belucci, his sword dripping with blood, advanced with a sinister grin. Jared screamed, flailing helplessly.

“What should we do, master? Shall I finely slice him and hang him at the castle gates?”

“No, please, spare me!”

“Or impale him on a spear as an example?”

Belucci was gleefully pondering options.

Jared collapsed to the ground, a mere threat rendering him helpless.

“I was wrong. It was foolish. You’re the earl. Please, spare my life.”

Jared begged Leonard for mercy. Helena swiftly changed sides and whispered to Leonard.

“Craig, finish off this vile man. Keeping him alive is dangerous.”

“Hmm. Good point. Belucci.”

“Yes?”

“Deal with her too.”

“Craig!”

Belucci grabbed Helena by the hair and threw her to the ground. Lili screamed, rushing to her.

“Mother! Craig, how could you do this to her?”

“Didn’t you see your mother trying to trap me?”

“It was all Jared’s trick. You know how much she loves you, right?”

“Such unconvincing excuses. Anything more creative?”

“From what I see, there’s no room for repentance. Let’s just kill them all here.”

Belucci glanced at Leonard, sword raised, ready to strike at the slightest nod.

“Ahh!”

Suddenly, Arnold collapsed with a short scream, a dagger thrown by Belucci embedded deep in his thigh.
“Where do you think you’re going, running away like a rat?”

“Craig, just once, please forgive me. My mother and uncle were really deceived by him!”

“One more lie and I’ll tear out your mother’s tongue.”

Leonard’s threat made Lili’s face go pale. Trembling, she looked around.

She then noticed Cordelia, the only one maintaining composure in this blood-scented situation. Lili yelled at her.

“Cordelia!”

“Yes?”

Arnold was clutching his bleeding thigh, gasping for breath, while Jared was subdued by Belucci, almost out of his senses. Helena, too, lay on the ground bleeding from her head after being thrown. Baron Lancaster was silently watching everything.

But Cordelia was different. She continued her meal as if dining alone.

“Can you talk to Craig, please?”

“What about?”

“Craig is trying to kill my mother! And you’re just calmly eating potatoes in this situation?”

“These potatoes are really tasty today.”

Cordelia replied nonchalantly, savoring her mashed potatoes. She was sincere. The potatoes were exceptionally smooth that day.

Lili, unable to control her temper, shouted.

“Hey! Don’t you understand the situation? Craig, your husband!”

“Lili. Haven’t you realized yet?”

“Realized what?”

“It’s not the time to scold me, but to kneel and beg.”

“…”

“If it hurts your pride, it’s okay not to. It means you’re not desperate enough.”

“You, you!”

Cordelia spoke softly. Then, she turned her attention back to her plate.

Meanwhile, Belucci dragged Arnold, who was by the door, and dropped him next to Helena like a sack.

“Aaargh!”

Deliberately grabbing Arnold’s sword-pierced leg was clearly intentional. Arnold screamed in pain.

But Belucci, grinning, paid no mind. He tapped Jared’s head with his sword and asked his master.

“Shall I kill them?”

“Hmm. Should we?”

“Earl Abrams. Please, just once, forgive me. Blinded by greed, I was. If you spare me, I’ll leave this territory and never return. Please, I beg you.”

Jared was the quickest to adapt, acknowledging Leonard as the earl and begging for his life.

“Craig, Craig. Jared Abrams orchestrated this, hiring knights to kill you! Blinded by ambition for the earldom!”

“Can’t you shut up? Weren’t you the one who suggested inviting the Earl of Abrams to dinner?”

Arnold and Jared argued back and forth, each trying to shift the blame. Watching the tedious argument, Leonard asked.

“What do you think, Cordelia?”

“About what?”

“All these people here. Should I kill them?”

“Not a bad idea.”

“Cordelia!”

Helena, who had been silent until then, raised her voice, filled with betrayal. She glared at Cordelia, expecting her to intervene.

“How can you be so heartless, ungrateful girl! Encouraging instead of stopping?”

“Encouraging? I’m just respecting your nobility.”

“You, you!”

Lili and her mother shared the same exclamation when angry.

Arnold urgently grabbed Helena’s shoulder.

“Sister. We could really die here.”

“So what? I can’t bow to her even if I die!”

“The countess is right. Better to die honorably than to grovel before a bought Basquez.”

“Wait!”
“Craig, since the Countess’s intentions are so noble, let’s just kill them all. It would be dishonorable for us to beg when they are so resolute.”

Cordelia spoke without blinking, prompting Leonard to chuckle, unable to hold back his amusement.

I thought she might at least pretend to object, but as always, her response was unexpected.

“Really? Then let’s do that. I’ll follow whatever the Countess decides.”

Suddenly, Leonard handed the decision-making power to Cordelia. At this, Arnold and Lili became even more desperate.

“No, Mother! What are you saying right now?”

“Sister, if you want to die, die alone. I can’t do that.”

Arnold’s will to live seemed strong. He hobbled to Cordelia, knee deep in his wounded leg, and knelt before her.

“It’s all my fault. All of it.”

“Do you really think so?”

“Yes. If you let this go just once, I’ll live in atonement for the rest of my life.”

“But your words are too brief. Maybe that’s why? It doesn’t seem very desperate.”

Cordelia leaned slightly, addressing the kneeling Baron Arnold.

Arnold furrowed his brow but quickly prostrated himself. He knew better than anyone that a moment of pride wouldn’t guarantee his life.

“I’m sorry, Countess. My upbringing is lacking, so I don’t know how to address those above me properly.”

“Hmm. That’s right. Knowing one’s own shortcomings is more important than learning. What do the other two think?”

Following Arnold’s betrayal-like surrender, Lili and Helena just looked at each other. Lili was the first to speak.

“I, I think so too.”

“Me?”

“…I think so too. The title of Abrams rightfully belongs to Craig. My mother and uncle were blinded by greed.”

“Lili!”

“Countess. Lili is speaking. It’s rude to interrupt.”

Cordelia reprimanded Helena in a calm tone. Helena’s face turned red with anger.

Synopsis

During a voyage at sea, Jiang Yang accidentally captures a merman.

Servant: I heard that mermen are fierce and brutal.

Jiang Yang looks at the merman obediently rubbing her palm like a puppy: “You call this fierce and brutal?”

Servant: I heard that mermen have no human nature.

Jiang Yang looks at the merman with wet puppy eyes, obsessively calling her ‘A Yang’ like a childish infant: “You call this having no human nature?”

With great difficulty, she releases the merman back into the sea and returns to shore.

Who would have thought that in less than half a month, the merman, who should have been freely wandering in the South China Sea, would shed his scales, endure the pain of losing his tail, transform into human legs, and come ashore to find her?

He kneels at her feet, rubbing her palm, with merman tears rolling down: “A Yang, don’t abandon me.”
