As a child, my hobby was sneaking into my father’s study to steal books and then reading them in my mother’s room.

If my father knew I was reading his books, he would have been furious, so I always had to hide in dark corners.

“Poor thing.”

Whenever I did this, my sick mother would look at me and say things I couldn’t understand.

“Why?”

“Because you won’t be able to have what you want.”

“But I don’t want anything.”

Then my mother would stroke my hair and say, “You’re a child of great desires, Cordelia. My daughter. Will you be satisfied with just one book when you grow up? It’s human nature to be curious and want to know more, and to actually want to go there.”

“Uh?”

“Poor thing. Your father will surely hold you back. It would have been better if you were born somewhere else, not from my womb.”

“But I like being with mom the best.”

When I said this, my mother would hug me tightly. It was one of the few beautiful memories I had.

My mother’s face is becoming blurrier in my mind.

My consciousness, which had been deeply submerged, rose to the surface.

I see the familiar ceiling as I blink my eyes.

Emily, who was sitting next to me, brightened up and said, “Are you feeling a bit better?”

“Uhh.”

Emily burst into tears while speaking. Her eyes were already red. “The lady…uhh… she said it was nothing, but you’ve been unconscious for four days…”

“Four days? Have I been out for that long?”

“Yes. Fortunately, the master brought all the nearby physicians and urged them to save you.”

“Huh? Craig did?”

I blinked in surprise at the unexpected mention of Craig’s name.

“Yes. The atmosphere was so tense, the physicians were trembling as they treated you. And then there was a big fight with the lady…”

Speak of the devil, Leonard burst into the room just as Emily mentioned him.

Emily quickly vacated her seat for him.

He stood by my bed, silently staring at me for a while.

“Why are you looking at me like that?”

“Are you stupid?”

“Huh?”

“You have a peanut allergy, yet you ate something containing peanuts without checking? Is your brain just for decoration? Why do you have it?”

“Is that what you say to someone who just woke up?”

Despite having a near-death experience, his first words were not of comfort but criticism, which was typical of him.

Yet, oddly, I wasn’t too upset by his harsh words. I just chuckled.

“But I miraculously didn’t die.”

“Miraculously? You?”

Leonard let out a sarcastic laugh. “You’re the dumbest person I’ve ever met.”

“Sure, sure.”

“You’ll eat anything handed to you.”

“The lady offered it to me. How could I refuse?”

“Do you not have a mouth or a tongue? Can’t you say no? What if she had poisoned you instead of peanuts? Would you still have eaten it and died?”

“Ah, if it had been poison, I wouldn’t have eaten it. I’m not that foolish.”

I pouted my lips. Leonard shook his head briefly.

“Idiot, ah. Forget it. Anyway, I’m going to clean up this place now that you’re somewhat recovered.”

“I never giggled like that. Wait, clean up? What do you mean?”

“This castle. It’s about time to get rid of the filth.”

Leonard’s face turned unusually cold. He crossed his arms and stared out the window.

I realized that ‘filth’ probably included Helena. I was too scared to ask what he planned to do with her.

“By the way, you have special training starting tomorrow.”

“What? Special training all of a sudden? I just woke up, you know?”
“Is that what’s important? What if you eat something with peanuts again and die?”

Leonard spoke brusquely and turned to leave the room. Cordelia reached out and grabbed the hem of his clothing.

“Wait a minute.”

“What? Let go.”

“What about the letter?”

He looked at Cordelia with a nuanced expression and then handed her a crumpled letter from his pocket. Cordelia clutched the letter tightly, unable to take her eyes off it for a long time.

Leonard casually remarked as he passed by, “Tuition.”

“Huh?”

“Tuition, for your brother. The money…”

“It’s all lies.”

Without blinking, she tore the letter into shreds. Leonard looked taken aback.

“What are you doing?”

“I should have torn it up sooner. Just an excuse to get caught.”

Cordelia ground her teeth as she turned the letter into dust.

“Tuition? Ha, what kind of schooling would Dennis get with that brain of his? He could barely write his name at age ten. I’d sooner believe a passing dog could write.”

“So, you’re saying it was just an excuse to get money?”

“Didn’t I say? To my father, I’m just a source of money.”

She looked disdainfully at the scraps that had been the letter.

“And this isn’t the first time my father sent such letters. He’s been sending them consistently since two months after my marriage.”

Initially, she opened them, hoping for a letter of concern, only to be disappointed.

As these types of letters continued, she first felt pity for her father, then anger, and finally shame. She felt sorry for and pitiful about her own situation.

“I ignored them all. I never even mentioned it to the lady.”

“Why?”

He asked, his expression showing pure curiosity. Cordelia let out a weak laugh.

When the male lead is punished by carrying the female lead’s child and having periods like a woman

“I’ve given birth to two children for you, yet you still think about him.

Was I nothing but his substitute to you from beginning to end?”
