Laches hadn’t been able to sleep lately.

He had simply wanted to hear Referentia’s story of her life directly from her.

Yet all she had poured out was resentment.

It kept gnawing at Laches. Why had he only ever thought of it as a happy memory?

He ought to apologize, but she was currently in the North serving as a maid—not as Referentia—so he had no proper opportunity to say anything.

As he kept searching for the right words to apologize, sleepless nights stretched longer and longer, and days kept passing by.

When he still didn’t know what to do, the woman came to him first.

It had always been this way. She always came first, and even when he didn’t seek her out, she inevitably caught his eye.

And just when he thought everything had worked out fine—

On skin as white as snow-capped mountains, crimson blood bloomed. In that instant, everything Laches saw felt like an illusion.

Time seemed to freeze completely. Memories of losing subordinates—or comrades—during battles against monsters flashed through his mind, and Laches reacted before he could think.

‘What on earth is this…?’

Her thin, delicate arms—so fragile they seemed they’d break at a mere touch—were catching the flowing blood.
