My fingers involuntarily twitched at Mother’s story. I clenched my hands tightly to keep it from showing outwardly and forced a smile.

“It was kind of you. In this empire, your mother was the first and last person who treated me not as a Saintess, but as a human being. …I thought I’d never meet anyone like her again after leaving the empire.”

Grandmother gazed at me silently. Her eyes held distrust and disdain toward the empire, yet beneath it all lay a faint trace of warmth directed at me.

“I didn’t meet your mother often, but even one meeting was enough to understand what kind of person she was. She was dignified and graceful—like a tranquil lake breathing deep within an untouched, lush forest.”

Mother.

I saw Mother’s image through Grandmother’s memories.

“…Is that so?”

Having read all of Grandmother’s memories, I already knew well the Mother she described.

Yet I merely nodded quietly and listened intently as Grandmother continued speaking of her.

Perhaps sensing this, Grandmother went on at length about Mother.

“…So when she came to see me back then, I even hoped we might become close friends. But I quickly abandoned that hope when she immediately began acting strangely.”

Grandmother chuckled softly, recalling that memory, then turned to look at me.

“So it was all for you.”

I neither nodded in agreement nor shook my head in denial—only smiled along with her.

Grandmother seemed to regard it as a secret too painful to speak of and showed no intention of pressing further.
