The moment the words left my mouth, Laches’s brow furrowed. I’d expected him to be pleased if my existence posed a threat to the villain, yet his expression was grave.

Laches swept his wet hair back and placed both hands on the ground. Then, in one swift motion, he leapt out of the water.

I was glancing around, wondering if I could find something to hand him, when Laches quietly asked me.

His unwavering gaze made it clear he was serious.

“If we return to the capital like this, you’ll be dragged into another whirlpool of chaos. Is that really the right thing to do?”
