Ryston received orders to infiltrate the mansion of ‘Count Belmore,’ who had been dismissed from his position as Horizon’s chief researcher, observe his activities, and report back.

Count Belmore was the sort of man who, two years prior, had been stripped of his chief researcher status and expelled after repeated discoveries of bizarre, unauthorized experiments conducted without reporting to superiors; since then, he’d locked himself indoors, refusing to see anyone.

Horizon had been monitoring him as a person of interest, and recently his suspicious behavior had finally led to his exposure.

In the dead of night, Ryston secretly infiltrated Count Belmore’s estate to carry out his mission, launching a thorough search of the mansion. Immediately upon entering, he smashed all the control stones that suppressed magic use, then moved room to room, casting ‘hypnosis’ on the household staff, plunging them into a deeper sleep than usual.

It would have been nice if he’d encountered Count Belmore during this process, but the count—who was always said to be holed up at home—was nowhere to be found in the entire mansion.

Of course, since he already knew the count had illegally converted the basement into a laboratory, he assumed the man must be down there.

Finding the entrance to the basement wasn’t difficult for someone who could use scrying magic. He quickly discovered a passage hidden behind a false wall and calmly headed down.

In the basement, there was one other person besides Count Belmore.

A woman. Bound to a chair, drenched in blood. A foul-smelling, filthy woman.

The stench emanating from her was hardly different from that of a long-neglected corpse—in some ways, even worse.

Ryston pinched his nose shut and leaned against the wall, sitting down.
