Noah sighed softly and turned away, watching his skewer leave his hand. At that moment, Joseph realized his mistake.
‘I should have declined.’
It was the beginning of complications in Joseph’s life.
“Let’s meet the person we’re supposed to and then I’ll attend to my business.”
Amy checked the time and spoke to Noah. Noah, puzzled, clutched at her sleeve.
“Where are you going? Alone?”
“It’s not a place for kids.”
Amy replied lightly and gestured to Joseph. He stood beside Noah, his face pale with nervousness. Noah glanced at him suspiciously before addressing Amy again.
“I’ll be good. I can be quiet like I’m not here. So…”
Noah’s persistence made Amy frown. Finally, she had to use the magic words.
“Lord Noah, what did you promise when I became your head maid?”
Noah bit his lip and looked down.
“…That I’d listen to Amy until I become an adult.”
“It won’t take long. We’ll meet again in front of Joseph’s inn.”
Noah gazed longingly at Amy and then obediently stepped back. Joseph, deep in thought about why the Second Prince was being called Noah, received a stern look from Amy. She then checked the mercenaries escorting them once more before turning and disappearing into the crowd.
“…”
Noah watched her leave with a sorrowful gaze.
“Ah, my ankle…”
Amy limped away from the crowd, trying not to show her pain in front of the Second Prince. It seems she had overexerted herself. She stopped in a secluded alley, unwrapped her ankle bandage, and rewrapped it tighter.
‘That’s better.’
After testing her foot on the ground a few times, Amy continued towards her destination. Relying on her old memories, she effortlessly navigated the convoluted, ant-hill-like alleys, arriving at a dilapidated building. She checked her appearance there.
‘First, I need to cover my face…’
As she reached for the scarf she had prepared, someone brushed past her shoulder.
“Ah!”
Amy staggered but the passing man just glanced at her and continued on his way. Watching his retreating back, Amy muttered a few complaints and then wrapped the scarf around her face.
‘Face and head covered… good.’
Looking up, she saw a painted sign hanging over the door, resembling a noble family’s coat of arms – a shield with a snake, crossed by a sword and a spear in an X shape.
Amy gazed meaningfully at the sign, then opened the door and entered.
The pub seemed deserted, not a single customer in sight. A man sitting under a shelf lined with liquor bottles at the counter spoke indifferently.
“Welcome.”
Amy approached the man, cleared her throat, and spoke in a gruff voice.
“I’m here to see the guild master.”
“…The password?”
The man eyed Amy up and down, his voice skeptical. Amy replied with an incredulous expression.
“A password? Just call him here.”
“…You’re not fooling around.”
The man clicked his tongue and stood up, disappearing somewhere. Amy chose an empty table and sat down, her posture relaxed but internally, she was incredibly tense.
‘Stay calm, Amy. You can do this.’
As she reassured herself, the man reappeared and said,
“The guild master says to come to the back room.”
“…”
Amy rose and followed the man to the back room. The dim room, darkened with boards over the windows, had only one candle burning. As Amy sat down in the chair in the center of the room, a large man opposite her asked in a booming voice,
“What business do you have with the guild master?”
“I’ve come to withdraw a deposit I left.”
The guild master narrowed his eyes at Amy’s words. Her voice, obviously disguised with artificial throat-clearing, was suspicious from the get-go. But then, who visiting here wasn’t suspicious?
“Do you have the token?”
“Here.”
Amy took out a wooden token from her pocket and placed it on the table. The man picked it up and examined it carefully, then nodded his head in acknowledgment.
Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away
This is also on my reread list!
This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.
Definitely worth a read, y’all!
The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.
But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.
Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.
I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.
The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.
As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
