Noah shifted his approach. He intended to make her realize just how bright her future still was.

“Amy, you’re only twenty-three. Considering the average lifespan of a continent-dweller is eighty, that means you’d have to live alone and lonely for a whopping fifty-seven years. Doesn’t the mere thought make your bones ache? What about me?”

But Amy was no pushover either.

“Being with someone doesn’t automatically guarantee happiness, does it? I’ll prove that I can live perfectly well on my own.”

Then she shot Noah a glare so sharp it made her eyes appear white.

“The person who just came of age recently is talking about bones aching? Please say something that actually makes sense.”

Noah pouted and grumbled sulkily,

“Then I guess I’ll have to prove that if Amy abandons me, I’ll waste away and die.”

“Huh?”

Amy’s eyes widened in surprise, then quickly rolled in exasperation. She was clearly calculating the consequences for the duchy should he end up dying alone as a bachelor. Seeing her sink into serious thought, Noah felt utterly deflated.

‘Seriously? The duchy’s interests come before my genuine feelings?’

To be precise, it wasn’t really the duchy’s interests—it was Noah’s own.

After all, from the moment Amy had come to him in the ruined Second Imperial Prince’s palace and asked to become his head maid, she had set her entire standard for happiness on Noah’s well-being.

Knowing this better than anyone, Noah felt a bitter pang in his chest. To Amy, he was firmly established as someone to be cared for and served.
