“No, why are you here?”

The maid dropped the poker and hurried over to support her, dragging her icy body out of the storeroom as she spoke.

“Weren’t you supposed to go to the capital with His Highness the Crown Prince?”

“……”

The person hiding in the storeroom was Sally. She hadn’t left with the Crown Prince but had instead sneaked into the ducal palace. She’d originally planned to stay safely hidden for just one more day before emerging, but she’d been discovered far too soon.

‘His Highness probably hasn’t gone far yet…’

She could still catch up if she rode a swift horse now. Sally’s face crumpled in despair.

‘Amy will definitely try to send me away.’

Her chest felt ready to burst from hopelessness. Tears welled up uncontrollably, and she began sobbing without realizing it. The maid, startled, loosened her grip.

“No, did I hold you too tightly? Why are you crying?”

Seizing the maid’s moment of fluster, Sally mustered all her strength and wrenched her arm free. The instant the maid’s hand let go, Sally shot forward like an arrow.

“Huh? Wha—what?”

The maid stood bewildered for a moment before snapping back to her senses. By then, Sally had already vanished into the darkness. The maid scratched her head vigorously.

“Seriously, that girl is such a handful…”

Turning abruptly, the maid gathered her skirts and dashed toward the guardhouse.
