“So, what about the carriage from Franz that we sent back today?”

“We had no choice. With the Countess having lost her memory and unaware of all this, sending her to meet the Grand Duke could have been dangerous. Franz might seem always smiling, but he hides sinister intentions behind that smile. He could have exploited her memory loss. That would have been a disaster.”

The devious nature hidden behind a smiling face – that was Franz’s character as explicitly described in the novel. I thought nobody knew, but apparently, some were aware. After all, not everyone is a fool.

“The Countess needs to be extremely careful and cautious now. More than ever.”

“Because of the newspapers? About being the scandalous and debauched heiress and all that?”

“That too, but more importantly…”

“More importantly?”

“Why are you lowering your voice so much? You’re making me nervous.”

My astonished face prompted Hanna to blink in surprise.
