Ga Eul exited the office even faster than she had entered.

She completely abandoned her plan to observe the office’s situation and find out what fate awaited the company—she had to flee before Buldak arrived. Why had she forgotten that she’d ordered Buldak for the president’s hangover remedy?

In the process, she left the coffee carrier behind on the table.

It seemed she’d wasted money on coffee without even learning why that handsome man had come to see the president. What a mess. After the president had gotten drunk the previous night and then eaten Buldak on an empty stomach this morning, it didn’t seem possible to collect the coffee money from him.

Ga Eul headed to the convenience store farthest from the office. Until the Buldak’s potency wore off, it seemed best to keep her distance from the president.

After checking the operational status at three convenience stores, Ga Eul received a phone call.

The caller ID displayed “Woo Jin’s Father.” Suspecting the call was related to Woo Jin’s mother’s visit that morning, Ga Eul hesitated briefly before answering.

“Hello, Uncle.”

Attempting to lift her spirits despite her low mood, Ga Eul greeted him more brightly.

“You must be very busy? You’re working hard despite the heat.”

“No, not really—I don’t have much to do anyway.”

“If you’re not too busy, could we meet briefly? I happened to be nearby and thought of you. How about having lunch together?”

“Just let me know the location, and I’ll come there.”

She wanted to suggest they talk over the phone instead, but there was no avoiding it—he’d already arrived nearby. Dealing with both Woo Jin’s mother and father on the same day was exhausting, no matter how firmly she fortified her heart with emotional walls.

Still, Ga Eul decided to stay positive. Thanks to Woo Jin’s mother showing up early that morning, she hadn’t had time to pack a lunch—so this worked out. She’d save on lunch. Plus, she needed to report to Woo Jin’s father about the visitor who’d come to see the president.

At the arranged cold noodle restaurant, Woo Jin’s father, Seon Jae Ho, was already waiting. As soon as Ga Eul greeted him and sat down, the food he’d pre-ordered was promptly served to the table.

“In summer, cold noodles are truly the best. Eat up—you seem thinner every time I see you.”

Contrary to his words, Director Seon Jae Ho pushed the sliced boiled pork dish toward Ga Eul.

“Thank you, I’ll enjoy it.”

Without declining, Ga Eul picked up her chopsticks. She needed to eat as much as she could while she had the chance—who knew when she’d get to eat beef boiled pork again? Beef always belonged to her younger sister, Gyeo Wool.

Thinking of Gyeo Wool, Ga Eul’s chopsticks paused mid-air. She wished her grandmother and Gyeo Wool could have some too.

“Please pack three servings of boiled pork to go.”

Noticing Ga Eul’s hesitation, Woo Jin’s father quickly asked the staff to pack some boiled pork.

Such kind people. Woo Jin’s parents were deeply grateful figures to Ga Eul’s family—how much support they’d offered after her father passed away.

Precisely because she was so grateful, she felt even more guilty. She hadn’t yet resolved things with Woo Jin, causing unnecessary worry for his parents. She needed to make Woo Jin let go of his feelings for her—soon.

“How is your grandmother’s health?”

“Yes.”

Ga Eul lowered her head deeply.

“And Gyeo Wool? Is she attending school regularly? The college entrance exam isn’t far off now.”

“Gyeo Wool is completely absorbed in her studies, as you’d expect.”

For a fleeting moment, Ga Eul resented her father. If he were still alive, perhaps she wouldn’t feel this guilt toward Woo Jin’s father. If only he hadn’t quit his job and started his own business… If only that business hadn’t failed…

“Anything unusual at the office? Is CEO Ki still drinking heavily?”

Ga Eul set down her chopsticks mid-bite and replied.

“Yes. Lately, it seems he’s drinking even more—both frequency and quantity have increased. Last night, he apparently drank all night and was passed out on the office sofa this morning, completely unconscious.”

As she spoke, she thought she still smelled alcohol on herself and grimaced.

“Didn’t someone come to see him today?”

“Yes, someone did. He seemed like the president’s friend, but since the president didn’t introduce him to me, I don’t know who he was.”

While answering, Ga Eul realized this must be the reason Woo Jin’s father wanted to meet—not because of his wife’s visit earlier.

“What did he look like? Any distinctive clothing or features?”

“He was handsome—seemed like someone raised well in a good family. He and the president appeared very familiar with each other.”

Ga Eul answered, recalling the image of the president and that handsome man together in the office.

“So Jeong Se Hyun really has returned.”

Woo Jin’s father murmured to himself.

“Pardon?”

“You observed him well. The man who came today—his name is Jeong Se Hyun—an old friend of CEO Ki’s. In fact, his only friend. Yes, he truly is from a good family. Have you heard of the law firm APEC? He’s the son of its managing partner—and himself a remarkably competent lawyer.”

APEC Law Firm was famous enough that even Ga Eul had heard of it. She nodded.

“Did you overhear what they were discussing?”

“No. The president sent me out before they began talking. He seemed eager for me to leave quickly. Until I stepped out, both men remained silent.”

“Hmm.”

Woo Jin’s father, Seon Jae Ho, fell briefly silent, seemingly deep in thought, then stared intently at Ga Eul. After a long pause, he spoke.

Chapter 115 Chapter 114

“Ga Eul, if those two meet again, could you listen in on their conversation and let me know?”

“Could you?”—Woo Jin’s father never commanded her with “Do it” or “Please do it for me.” He always asked, “Could you?”—as if she truly had a choice. Yet they both knew she had no freedom to refuse.

How could she possibly say no, with the gratitude—and debt—toward Woo Jin’s father tightening around her throat? How could she dare?

Ga Eul stared blankly at Woo Jin’s father. Somehow, this felt like a decisive moment.

She’d known from the start—when she joined Dae Woon Investment—that she’d need to report on CEO Ki’s activities. Woo Jin’s father had told her explicitly when arranging her placement:

“Could you regularly update me on how CEO Ki is doing? His grandfather is very worried about him and wants to know if he’s living properly. Since I can’t monitor his situation day by day, could you help me out?”

Back then, Ga Eul had readily agreed.

Later, after witnessing how CEO Gi Dae Woong lived, she fully understood his grandfather’s concern—it was only natural he wanted updates. Anyone would worry he might cause trouble at any moment.

Yet this time, she couldn’t so easily agree. This request felt different—not just a grandfather’s benign concern for his grandson. He likely wasn’t merely curious about the state of Gi Dae Woong and Jeong Se Hyun’s friendship.

A sense of being trapped overwhelmed her. Should she have refused help from Woo Jin’s parents? She hadn’t anticipated that their kindness would one day become a noose around her neck.

“Yes, I will.”

After a long silence, Ga Eul finally replied—knowing full well that what Woo Jin’s father now asked was different from what he’d asked back then, yet answering just the same.

She had one small reassurance: her belief that the president wouldn’t share his conversation with Jeong Se Hyun with her. Given how hastily he’d dismissed her earlier, this belief didn’t seem unfounded.

Simultaneously, suspicion arose: Had Woo Jin’s father placed her at Dae Woon Investment precisely for this moment?

Was it to uncover what Gi Dae Woong and Jeong Se Hyun were planning? Otherwise, why call her immediately after Jeong Se Hyun visited Gi Dae Woong?

* * *

“Oh? Why are you back so early?”

After parting with Woo Jin’s father, Ga Eul returned to the office with a troubled mind—and Gi Dae Woong immediately asked her this.

Ga Eul narrowed her eyes and scanned him. Jeong Se Hyun was gone; the president sat alone, eating a lunch box. Something felt off—almost as if he were hiding his flustered state.

More importantly, was this how a normal boss should address a subordinate? Shouldn’t it be “Why are you so late?” instead? What trouble had the president caused in her absence? Ga Eul quickly glanced around the office—nothing seemed different from when she’d left.

“Did the visitor leave?”

“Hmm.”

The president gave an evasive reply.

“Go to the pharmacy and buy me a hangover remedy.”

Running errands was solely Ga Eul’s duty as Gi Dae Woong’s only subordinate. When she’d first joined, she’d briefly resisted doing such tasks herself—

Only briefly, though. She’d even protested, asking, “Did you hire me just to run errands?”—only to confirm, in the end, that yes, that was exactly why.

“You just took one earlier. And does it have to be from a pharmacy? Convenience stores sell them too.”

Suspecting the president was making up excuses to send her out again, Ga Eul pushed back.

“The pharmacy ones seem more effective—I’ve noticed a real difference. I’m quite sensitive, you know. I was raised delicately.”

Ugh—not that “raised delicately” line again. She’d heard “I was raised delicately” so often it was practically branded into her ears—he tacked it onto nearly every sentence.

Either way, now she was stuck. The hangover remedy she’d just “donated” to him had been her last one. Now she’d have to walk all the way to the pharmacy under this scorching sun.

“That’ll be 4,000 won.”

As Ga Eul held out her hand for the remedy’s cost, something familiar caught her eye.

“President!”

Ga Eul shrieked. So *this* was why he’d looked so flustered.

“That’s *my* lunch box!”

Her grandmother must have dropped it off while she was out—given how Woo Jin’s mother’s visit had left her no time to pack one, her grandmother probably knew.

“You can just eat the Buldak.”

The president jerked his chin toward the still-unopened Buldak package and quietly pulled the lunch box closer to himself—he had no intention of giving it up.

“Don’t call me ‘you.’ My name is Han Ga Eul. No matter how small this office is, I’m still your subordinate. Instead of ‘hey’ or ‘you,’ please call me ‘Ms. Han Ga Eul.’”

Ga Eul raised her voice in protest—even as she wondered whether she was venting misplaced anger on the wrong person.

She couldn’t direct her resentment toward Woo Jin’s kind parents, so the suppressed hurt they’d unintentionally caused erupted as fury toward the president.

She’d lost count of how many times she’d confronted him about this same issue. Each time, he promised, “Got it,” but only until the next time—within minutes, her title would revert to “hey” or “you.”

“You dared to confess your love to your boss, yet I’m not allowed to even call you ‘you’?”

Huh—today the president was making actual sense. Had he eaten something strange? Was the lunch box spoiled? Since when did he use logic?

“If I like someone, I could even confess to my boss. But addressing a subordinate as ‘hey’ or ‘you’ is a human rights issue—it violates their dignity as a person.”

“Hmm, I see.”

The president gave a halfhearted reply while busily eating with his chopsticks—shamelessly, openly devouring someone else’s lunch box. Eventually, he even tilted the container toward his mouth and shoveled the contents in with his chopsticks.

“Stop eating and give it back.”

Her protest was useless—his chopsticks only moved faster.

Ga Eul let out a scream-like cry. Dae Woong, eyes wide with surprise, halted his chopsticks and looked up at her. He saw Ga Eul, eyes brimming with tears yet fiercely glaring at him.

Dae Woong had never seen Ga Eul cry—not truly. It was startling. Was stealing a lunch box really grounds for such a murderous glare?
