“Let’s go to the hospital first, quickly.”

As they exited the police station building, Ga Eul said to Dae Woon.

“It’s fine.”

“Fine? You were just screaming you were dying a moment ago. You even said your ribs might be broken.”

Ga Eul retorted sharply. Dae Woon shot her a sideways glance. *After all, who did I get beaten up for? Not only no thanks, but this attitude…*

“Lawyer Jung, thank you for your hard work. Since it’s so late, would you mind dropping the President and me off at the hospital ER on your way? I doubt we’ll find a taxi easily at this hour.”

Ga Eul politely asked Jeong Se Hyun, who stood beside her, chuckling quietly.

“The hard work was all yours, Ms. Ga Eul. Thanks to the video you recorded on your phone, things were resolved smoothly.”

Ga Eul had perfectly understood the look Dae Woon gave her before he was struck by Han Myeong Ho—so she’d immediately turned on her phone’s camera.

Though Han Myeong Ho, still drunk, tried to justify himself and even bluffed before the investigating detective, the video Ga Eul had recorded rendered his excuses useless. In the footage, Gi Dae Woong offered no resistance and simply endured the beating.

On top of that, Dae Woon exaggerated his pain dramatically beside her—so much so that Ga Eul turned away in embarrassment from his cries of “It hurts, I’m dying!” She couldn’t forget the detectives’ pitying, incredulous glances toward him.

“Without that video, you and Dae Woon could’ve been suspected of staging a self-injury extortion scheme. The way he carried on during questioning—even I felt embarrassed just watching.”

Still smiling faintly, Se Hyun spoke plainly.

“Right? His foot didn’t even reach his chest, yet he screamed his ribs were broken. Does that make any sense?”

“That’s exactly how you stop someone from ever trying to mess with you again—make them realize they picked the wrong person, a real street brawler.”

Dae Woon remained utterly unbothered, a textbook example of someone completely shameless.

“Unnie!”

At that moment, someone shouted and came running across the police station courtyard.

“Gyeo Wool!”

“I’m sorry—I came too late. I couldn’t find any open pharmacies.”

Gyeo Wool handed Ga Eul a plastic bag.

“Then where did you get this?”

“I asked Su Geun.”

“Oh, right—Su Geun’s father is a pharmacist.”

Su Geun was Gyeo Wool’s longtime friend. It was reassuring to have someone nearby in the same neighborhood to rely on in tough times.

“Thank you for helping my sister.”

Gyeo Wool bowed deeply to Dae Woon.

“At least *you* know how to be grateful—unlike a certain someone who’s utterly ungrateful.”

Though Dae Woon sneered, he looked at Gyeo Wool with warm eyes. Sweat glistened on Gyeo Wool’s face—Ga Eul could guess how hard he’d struggled to get the medicine. This was simply his way of expressing gratitude.

“I’m sorry, Unnie. I should’ve been there. What happened to Uncle Myeong Ho?”

“He got what he deserved.”

Dae Woon answered in his stead, snickering—until pain from his injuries made him grimace.

“Mr. Han Myeong Ho will spend tonight in the police holding cell. His guardian refused to take custody of him. Apparently, he frequently drinks and causes trouble. The police will keep him under supervision until he sobers up, then release him tomorrow morning.”

Se Hyun kindly rephrased Dae Woon’s crude reply into something more dignified.

“And after he’s released from the cell? Can he move around freely then?”

Gyeo Wool asked, his face still clouded with worry.

“He won’t be free—not by a long shot. For starters, we’ll file a restraining order to keep him at least 100 meters away from you and your sister. Though honestly, even without that, he’ll have no time to bother you—he’ll be too busy shuttling between the police station and court. After all, we have a highly capable lawyer here.”

Dae Woon grinned broadly, then winced again with a groan as pain shot through his injuries.

“You lunatic. Who in their right mind calls a corporate litigation specialist for a simple assault case? I haven’t been to a police station since my days as a junior associate. Do you even know my hourly rate?”

“Uh—actually, you don’t need to file a restraining order against us.”

Nervous at Se Hyun’s mention of legal fees, Ga Eul quickly interjected.

“No need to worry, Ms. Ga Eul. I was retained by *this* client.”

Hearing Se Hyun’s words, Ga Eul suddenly realized how true the saying was—that the face reflects the heart. Truly, a handsome person had a beautiful heart, too.

Se Hyun insisted on driving Ga Eul and Gyeo Wool home in his car. When Ga Eul protested that he should take the President to the hospital first, he replied simply:

“We *will* go to the hospital—after all, we need the official medical report. But don’t worry too much about Dae Woon. He’s the kind of guy who can take care of himself. I wouldn’t be surprised if he deliberately let them hit him in the face—so it’d look more severe.”

Though Ga Eul suspected this might just be flattery to reassure her, she found his reasoning oddly convincing.

Aside from his face, the President looked *too* unharmed—so much so that she nearly snorted at the idea that he was “the kind who can take care of himself.”

* * *

Finally, the day to visit their maternal grandparents arrived. A butler from the household conveyed that Grandmother Jang Ji Hong wished to meet Ga Eul and Gyeo Wool, and provided the address. Ga Eul chose a day Gyeo Wool didn’t have school to schedule the visit.

After taking the bus to the neighborhood where their Maternal Grandfather lived, Ga Eul and Gyeo Wool walked for a long while under the scorching summer sun.

“If I’d known, we should’ve just taken a taxi.”

Standing before the imposing gate of their Maternal Grandfather’s residence, Ga Eul muttered—already sweating through her only summer dress. She straightened her own appearance and then checked Gyeo Wool’s.

“Guess being a rich neighborhood doesn’t make it any cooler. The sun really shines equally on everyone, huh?”

Trying to ease the tension, Ga Eul spoke up—but Gyeo Wool remained silent.

“We’re just going to state clearly what we want. If things go wrong, we’ll just go back to living the way we always have. Think of it as a tour of a chaebol mansion—who knows when we’ll ever get to step inside a place like this again?”

Ga Eul fanned herself as she spoke.

“On a day like this, shouldn’t *they* be the ones coming to us? Instead of making us trek over in this heat.”

“Unnie, don’t be nervous.”

After watching Ga Eul chatter alone for a while, Gyeo Wool finally spoke—pressing the doorbell—as if he knew exactly why his sister talked so much when anxious.

“Who is it?”

A voice emanated from the microphone beside the camera installed on the gate.

“We’re the Chairman’s grandson and granddaughter. We’ve come as requested.”

Ga Eul’s tone sharpened. Was it insecurity? It irritated her that they’d ask “Who is it?” even after surely checking the monitor.

Gyeo Wool gently tapped Ga Eul’s shoulder.

“I’m okay, Unnie.”

As expected, Gyeo Wool had read Ga Eul’s mind. Her tension wasn’t for herself—it was for *him*. She feared their sudden visit might only end in hurt for Gyeo Wool.

To Ga Eul, Gyeo Wool would always be that elementary school boy—too young to even grieve properly when their mother passed. Though now he stood taller than her, inside, he remained the same child with those quiet, sorrowful eyes.

“I’m not an elementary school kid anymore. I’m not the child you have to keep taking care of forever.”

“I know. I get it.”

Smiling, Ga Eul nodded in agreement at her little brother, who’d somehow grown up so fast.

“Alright then—shall we, the unbeatable sibling duo, go in?”

Whatever awaited them, they’d find out once inside. Ga Eul stepped forward and entered the gate of their maternal grandparents’ home.

After crossing the spacious garden, they found someone waiting at the front entrance—a domestic helper, it seemed. Without even greeting them, she turned and said:

“Follow me.”

Of all possible phrases—why *that* one? “Let me guide you,” or “The Chairman is waiting for you”—anything but this, the most authoritarian-sounding command, delivered by a housekeeper.

Fine. We’ll follow—since we don’t know the layout anyway. Ga Eul walked resolutely. Their footsteps echoed alone down the silent hallway.

“Madam, the people you’ve been waiting for have arrived.”

At the housekeeper’s words, Ga Eul and Gyeo Wool exchanged glances—bothered that she hadn’t referred to them as “grandson and granddaughter.” Clearly, in this house, their status was no more than visitors the owner had consented to meet.

Entering through the door the housekeeper opened, they saw an elegant, elderly woman seated at the far end of a massive sofa table—undoubtedly Madam Jang Ji Hong, their maternal grandmother.

Ga Eul and Gyeo Wool bowed politely.

“I’m Han Ga Eul.”

“I’m Han Gyeo Wool.”

“Sit down.”

After their bow, as they stood awkwardly, Madam Jang addressed them in a tone devoid of emotion. For a reunion between grandmother and grandchildren, the lack of warmth was striking.

Then it dawned on Ga Eul: *This meeting is an interview.* Only by passing it would they be accepted into the family. That’s why Madam Jang Ji Hong sat alone with them—to assess whether these children could be useful to the household.

“You resemble your mother greatly.”

“……”

“……”

“Have you eaten?”

“At this hour, of course we’ve eaten. Please get straight to the point—we’re short on time. I need to study.”

Before Ga Eul could answer, Gyeo Wool cut in. His defiant tone startled Madam Jang—visibly, to Ga Eul’s eyes. And no wonder—Ga Eul herself had been shocked. Gyeo Wool wasn’t usually this blunt.

“Yes, you’re in grade 12. I heard you’re quite good at your studies?”

Madam Jang attempted to soften the atmosphere—still seemingly unwilling to push things to a breaking point.

“I’m only decent. The one who’s *truly* excellent is my sister.”

Gyeo Wool replied sharply. Madam Jang stared at him, flabbergasted. He made no effort to conceal his dislike for her—likely resenting the family for having neglected them all these years.

Madam Jang shifted her gaze to Ga Eul. She’d already completed a background check on both children and knew Ga Eul’s academic record well.

Back then, their mother had still been alive—so she must have supported Ga Eul properly. Even so, Ga Eul’s achievements were dazzling: she’d never ranked below 10th nationwide in any mock exam.

Their strong academic performance worked to Madam Jang’s advantage as well—

making it easier to persuade Chairman Oh Gyu Baek to bring the children in. Academically, they outshone every other child in the family—as potential successors to the conglomerate. Even Chairman Oh had acknowledged this.

“You’re on leave of absence, I hear? You should resume your studies.”

“That’s something I’ll handle myself.”

Hearing Ga Eul’s reply, Madam Jang frowned. The children clearly intended to resist—evidence of deep resentment toward their maternal family, too profound to overlook.

“‘Handle it yourself’? Surely you understand what ‘resume your studies’ implies. Didn’t you come here of your own accord because you’re interested in the benefits our family can offer? Or do you intend to claim you have no interest in your maternal family’s assets?”

“I’m not *that* naive. I desperately need money.”

Madam Jang nodded, her expression saying, *Of course—I expected as much.*

“But I didn’t come expecting one-sided help or favors. I came to propose an exchange—something we both need.”

Ga Eul held Madam Jang’s gaze, unblinking. She was ready to face off against the woman claiming to be her maternal grandmother.“`

Side Story 5 Side Story 4

Male lead is a clingy little husband

One-line summary: The male lead is initially an arrogant, noble, love-deprived brat, later a cute, clingy, scheming little jealous one.

Introduction:

One day, Lu Yuner’s soul transmigrates into a female-dominant world. She enters the Imperial Academy and takes up the position of a doctoral instructor, teaching classes and grading schoolwork.

One day, she encounters the young prince Su Qingwan secretly skipping class from the male academy.

As a result, Su Qingwan is punished.

From then on, Su Qingwan sees Lu Yuner as a “thorn in his side”.

But before long, this “thorn” becomes the person he cherishes most, and he goes to great lengths to win Lu Yuner’s affection.

Mini scene 1:

One day, the sun is high in the sky but Su Qingwan still hasn’t gotten up for class.

Servant Xiaoyuan: “Young prince, it’s time for class. You’ll be late otherwise.”

Su Qingwan says arrogantly: “I’m not going. I am the esteemed prince, my status is so noble, why should I suffer this hardship? Besides, isn’t learning all this just to please women? Hmph, they’re not worthy!”

Mini scene 2:

After Su Qingwan falls for someone, he completely changes. He no longer skips class and diligently learns how to be a good husband and father. But he discovers that Sister Yuner is always surrounded by admirers.

Drunk and overcome with jealousy one day, he clings to Lu Yuner, crying beautifully like a pear blossom in the rain.

Su Qingwan: “Qingwan likes Sister Yuner.”

Lu Yuner: “Young prince, you’re drunk.”

Su Qingwan: “Qingwan isn’t drunk. Qingwan likes Sister Yuner, likes you so much, likes you to bits…” Before he can finish, Lu Yuner’s eyes flash with emotion and she leans in closer.

[Reading Guide]

1. The female lead is gentle, gracious, humble and polite but not weak. The male lead is initially an arrogant, noble, love-deprived brat, later a cute, clingy, scheming little jealous one.

2. 1v1, a bit torturous in the beginning but definitely sweet later on.
