Ga Eul and Dae Woon walked back to Dae Woon’s house through the night streets. On the way, Ga Eul bought a bottle of wine and some snack crackers containing cheese from a convenience store.

Dae Woon looked at them as if they were suspicious objects—probably wanting to ask whether they were actually edible. He usually ate whatever was given to him without complaint, yet oddly, he occasionally turned picky.

“Don’t you trust the convenience store owner’s own goods?”

“Don’t ask about my past. I didn’t even know convenience stores sold wine.”

That made sense. After all, he was the kind of person who never set foot inside his own convenience store, even though it stood right across from his office.

“If you’ve never tried it, don’t talk about it.”

Ga Eul said it confidently—even though she herself had never tried it either. But she felt reassured, having bought snack crackers with cheese instead of actual cheese to pair with the wine.

What else is life, really? When you lose your teeth, you chew with your gums.

Perhaps sensing Ga Eul’s mood—that she wouldn’t be able to sleep without at least one drink—Dae Woon said nothing more.

He also grabbed a can of beer and placed it on the checkout counter. He even asked for the fried chicken displayed in the case beside the register. It seemed he, too, found it difficult to get through the night without alcohol.

The house had been thoroughly cleaned. It was so spotless that unless someone living there remembered, no one would ever know what had happened there.

Dae Woon led Ga Eul upstairs. After ascending all the way to the top floor, he entered a room. Just as Ga Eul thought they had finally reached their destination, Dae Woon pressed a switch on the wall, and a staircase descended from the ceiling.

His eyes gleamed mysteriously as he looked at Ga Eul.

“This was my childhood hideout.”

Dae Woon climbed the stairs first.
