Eun Chae looked straight up at him, who was gazing down at her as if ready to swallow her whole.

They hadn’t even exchanged a single word yet, but their clashing emotions already choked the breath from her lungs.

“Move aside.”

“You won’t come back.”

Her cold request was instantly crushed by his bluntly spat-out words. His tone—like someone who’d clung to life solely on the strength of that one sentence—sounded thick and sluggish, as if long-stagnant blood had finally begun to ooze out.

“You said you’d come back. But you never did.”

Eun Chae bit down hard on the inside of her cheek until she tasted metal, forcing her eyes wide open so he wouldn’t see her waver.

“Even so, you came looking for me? I’m sure I wrote it clearly enough.”

“We used to take turns distancing ourselves, frantic that we couldn’t stay apart. That was us.”

“But you should know this too, Song Eun Chae. When pulling away keeps repeating itself, so does turning back to search for each other.”

“Your happiness in a place without me is meaningless.”

He was still as ill-mannered as ever—recklessly arrogant. She’d always thought that’s just how he was. Yet now, somehow, it sounded desperate instead.

Eun Chae suppressed the sob clawing its way up her throat. The despair surging from deep within her core met that stifled cry, swirling into a whirlpool.
