Twenty-one years old. It was the anniversary of her mother’s death. The day her tears, which she thought had long dried up, burst forth like a dam breaking. That day, she went downstairs with swollen eyes from crying too hard again, only for her father to unexpectedly introduce a new bodyguard.

“This is Kwon Gi Ju. He’ll be exclusively handling your protection from now on.”

Her usually suspicious father looked unusually pleased. Eun Chae didn’t bother hiding her displeasure as she blatantly scanned him up and down.

She had seen him before, faintly. This household employed so many people that nearly everyone was a stranger—but not this man.

His features looked meticulously carved, and his build radiated an animal-like wildness. He was the very man even Grandma Ham An—who’d raised her in place of her mother—had wondered aloud about, asking whose son he might be.

He was also quite capable. Starting as a bodyguard, he’d risen to become one of her father’s inner circle. Naturally, that wasn’t good news for her. Anyone her father trusted implicitly was, by default, someone unlikely to be of any help to her.

Her personal bodyguard’s job included reporting every single move she made directly to Chairman Song. And now this man was even considered a confidant—how detailed would his reports be?

Fortunately, Kwon Gi Ju, as Eun Chae saw him, seemed far removed from the loyalty her father kept emphasizing. He showed neither courtesy nor tension. His gaze was slanted, yet not quite indolent—just unnaturally relaxed.

“Nice to meet you.”

Still, he bowed politely. Moved by his earnest effort, Eun Chae cleared her throat and chose an appropriate greeting—though she definitely would’ve offered a demure, usual bow if his eyes hadn’t wandered around, plainly bored and weary.

“What for?”

“…”

“You’ll be closely watching me and reporting everything to the Chairman, right? Even if it’s inconvenient for me, I’m supposed to say ‘Nice to meet you,’ is that it?”

The man blinked, completely unfazed. She felt slightly disappointed—she’d half-hoped to see that indifferent face of his twist in frustration.

“Song Eun Chae,” her father scolded, but she simply walked past without stopping. From behind, she heard her father make excuses: “She’s a bit prickly, but it’s your job to handle her well.” For some reason, her heart pounded heavily.

The next day, the man really did follow her like a shadow, apparently planning to accompany her all the way to school. Eun Chae deliberately provoked him.

“Why did you suddenly switch from guarding the Chairman to guarding me? Did you get demoted? If so, you’re in real trouble—at your age, already.”

She silently begged him over and over to just quit on his own. But the man acted exactly as his appearance suggested—unshaken by anything, and surprisingly patient despite his rough exterior.

The reason she saw him again stemmed from a very trivial incident. Eun Chae had secretly investigated her mother and tracked down a former housekeeper who’d once worked here. To meet the woman, who now lived in Geoje, she slipped away from him and boarded a train.

But the housekeeper never showed up at their meeting place. Overwhelmed by disappointment and helplessness, she didn’t even want to go back. After spending the entire day in Geoje, when she returned by train, the man was waiting for her at the station. He never reported this to her father.

“If you’re pitying me, don’t bother. Just go ahead and tell Father like you always do.”

It was a warning: don’t even think about exploiting her weakness. But the man said nothing. Her father remained clueless about the whole matter.

She became increasingly aware of him, yet he remained indifferent toward his charge.

She completely lost her heart to him during a business trip to the Philippines, accompanying her father. While wandering through Filipino street stalls during some free time, they were suddenly ambushed by thugs.

He fulfilled his duty as a bodyguard by taking a knife meant for Eun Chae. The attackers didn’t seem ready to give up, so they decided to hide until the police arrived.

They ended up in a Filipino hotel room barely better than a hostel. She tried hard to suppress her emotions, but seeing him bleeding made her blood boil.

“Why did you do that?”

She forced out the words through a dry, constricted throat. She knew well her father had many enemies—his aggressive, ruthless business style meant he’d discard anyone deemed useless without hesitation, inevitably creating adversaries. She hadn’t expected him to display that same ruthlessness even overseas.

“Did anyone ask you to take a knife for me?”

Her father had abruptly announced the complete shutdown of Dione’s Philippine factory—just as she happened to be in the country. Many people lost their jobs overnight. One local supervisor, harboring resentment, had attempted to harm her with a weapon.

Fortunately, Eun Chae survived—thanks only to that reckless man who’d thrown himself in front of her.

“That’s what I’d like to ask you.”

He lifted his gently lowered eyelids. In an instant, his pitch-black pupils locked onto her.

“You could’ve dodged it—but you didn’t.”

He sat up from the floor. His strong jawline, straight shoulders, tightly defined chest, sharply tapered waist, and deeply grooved abs with every movement—all radiated intense heat from his formidable body.

It was surely due to the wound in his side. Fresh blood seeped out, darkening the gauze covering the injury even further.

“…Does it even matter?”

“…”

“You said you weren’t interested in me.”

She spoke deliberately coldly.

“So you really wanted my attention that badly.”

But the man clicked his Zippo lighter casually and asked back with eerie calm—not joking at all. Eun Chae’s frustration instantly flared. It annoyed her how he deliberately asked, fully aware of her feelings.

She had to leave. She couldn’t stoop to bickering with an injured man. Most people avoid others not out of fear, but because they find them distasteful.

As Eun Chae tried to stand up abruptly, her arm was suddenly grabbed. Overpowered by his grip, she was helplessly dragged toward him.

Thud!

Her back hit the floor. Before she could process it, she had to hold her breath—the man straddling her radiated intense heat.

“Song Eun Chae.”

He rasped her name in a voice lower than average, then abruptly twisted his narrow eyes and dropped his head. His already ashen face was further shadowed by his dark hair.

When Eun Chae, startled, tried to look down at his wound, he sharply lifted his head.

“That’s why I’m a little interested.”

“…”

“Do it again.”

His shadow fell heavily over her widened eyes—he’d lowered his posture significantly. In his gaze, she saw something dark rippling.

Instinctively, Eun Chae wrapped her arms around his neck. After a moment’s hesitation, she successfully pressed her lips against his—lips so disciplined they looked almost ascetic. She heard him chuckle softly, his Adam’s apple vibrating.

She felt nauseous from the memory. Eun Chae snapped her eyes open.

This situation felt utterly unreal. Staring blankly at the man—Kwon Gi Ju—as if unable to believe her eyes.

His hair was slightly longer than two years ago, and he’d lost a bit of weight, making his nose bridge and jawline even sharper. The once chillingly narrow eyes now bore a faint crimson at their outer corners.

Had his eyes always looked like that?

While Eun Chae sifted through her tangled memories, he replied with an indifferent expression.

“Yes. I’m Kwon Gi Ju.”

“What are you… doing here…?”

Surprised and bewildered, Eun Chae couldn’t think rationally—it felt like seeing a ghost.

“I’ve returned.”

Hearing his curt explanation, her face hardened—his hand gripped her ankle. His touch, enveloping her icy skin, was maddeningly warm.

She silently watched as he moved. His fingers, unnecessarily straight and long, slipped her shoes on. The thought crossed her mind involuntarily.

After performing this unsolicited service, he slowly rose to his feet. Keeping his eyes lowered—never breaking eye contact with her—he lightly twisted his upper body and removed his coat.

Ah.

Eun Chae sighed soundlessly.

He hadn’t lost weight. His already lean body was now even more densely muscled.

For a moment, she felt something surge up from deep within. Whether he knew it or not, Kwon Gi Ju wrapped her firmly in his discarded coat. She looked up, nearly buried in it rather than simply wearing it.

“Let’s get up.”

He generously offered his hand again, as if inviting her to take it. Eun Chae stared at his outstretched hand for a moment—then abruptly slapped it away with her own. Immediately afterward, she defiantly pushed herself up from the floor using her palms.

Gi Ju briefly rubbed his rejected hand, then casually plunged it deep into his trouser pocket. Suddenly, at the sound of approaching footsteps, he half-turned his head to look.

Only then did the bodyguards sent by Chairman Song Myung Hwan arrive. Upon spotting Eun Chae, they charged forward as if ready to seize and drag her away—but instantly froze, as if they’d seen a snake.

It was because Kwon Gi Ju had swept back his hair and was staring at them with chillingly calm eyes.

Eun Chae recognized that look.

It was what he always did when things didn’t go his way.

Ha.

Letting out a hollow chuckle whose meaning even she couldn’t decipher, she walked away with sharp, deliberate steps through the tense silence.

Gi Ju’s eyes tracked her sideways movement. Meanwhile, the security team dispatched by Chairman Song Myung Hwan tensed, ready to pounce at any moment.

When the car door clicked open, everyone stared at her as if wondering what she’d do next.

Eun Chae got into the car. Immediately closing the door, she made it clear she wouldn’t allow anyone to sit beside her.

Watching this, Gi Ju eventually swept a hand along his neck. Then, as if amused, he let out a soft “Hmm” and raised one eyebrow.

What’s going on?

In the car, where the driver, Gi Ju in the passenger seat, and Eun Chae in the back all kept silent as if by mutual agreement, her thoughts were bewildered—but that was all she had.

It couldn’t be helped. The man who’d vanished without even a standard notice had suddenly reappeared before her eyes,

acting as if he’d never left.

Chairman Song must have issued some order—Eun Chae wasn’t dragged back to the engagement venue again. Instead, she was taken home and locked in her room.

While pacing restlessly, someone entered her room.

Eun Chae glared at the intruder who’d entered her room without permission. She was no longer naive enough to be lost only in confusion.

“You’re confined indoors for now. It’s the Chairman’s order.”

“…”

“I’ll be managing your schedule, Ms. Song Eun Chae.”

“…”

“Without my approval, you can’t keep any personal appointments either.”

Fury boiled within her. Seeing Kwon Gi Ju deliver these stern declarations with such solemnity made her stomach churn with anger.

Why? Unlike her—whose carefully applied makeup had completely smudged—he looked utterly flawless.

“Skilled, aren’t you? Is this your second time guarding Song Eun Chae?”

Even her sarcasm drew no meaningful reaction from Kwon Gi Ju.

“But what should we do…”

“…”

“You’re an experienced hire, sure—but you’re defective goods.”

She felt a sharp headache but didn’t show it.

“How can I trust my schedule to an employee who quit without notice?”

“Should I follow the Chairman’s orders instead?”

He tilted his head sideways as he shot back. Eun Chae clenched her icy fingertips tightly.

She’d thought she’d already felt enough betrayal toward Kwon Gi Ju—but she’d been wrong.

“…Why did you come back?”

Her suppressed voice was layered with resentment and hatred.

“The Chairman ordered my return…”

Smack!

Gi Ju’s head snapped sideways before he could finish. Eun Chae, having hurled her phone at his face, panted heavily as she glared at him.

A scratch from the phone case accessory split his cheek, blood beginning to seep out. Eun Chae’s eyes were as red and bloodshot as the wound.

“Spare me the obvious excuses.”

She’d thought she’d already felt enough betrayal toward Kwon Gi Ju—but she’d been wrong.

“…”

“Was I just too easy to fool? Were you afraid your Chairman—who ruins people as easily as he breathes—would find out you’d seduced me? You should’ve waited and negotiated a deal instead. Taken a fat payoff as the price for our breakup and run away. At least then you wouldn’t have had to crawl back here, chasing after the woman you abandoned, just for money.”

His lips, which had always feigned obedience, twisted. His lower lip, bitten between his teeth, was crushed under the pressure. His expression was strangely ambiguous—somewhere between scowling and smiling.

“So were you planning to marry me, then?”

Gi Ju asked, lightly brushing his fingers over the wound to wipe away the blood. Despite his calm tone, his face was terrifyingly dark.

“There’s that look again. The unhappiest face in the world.”

“…”

“If you lived with me, you’d truly fall into a pit of misery. Did you really want to be shackled to me that badly?”

His hand gently cradling her face felt burning hot.

“Tell me—were you planning to run away and just live somewhere?”

His tone, soothing like he was coaxing a child, was so tender it brought tears to her eyes.

“Only to be constantly tracked by bodyguards and dragged back like this?”

“…”

“Snap out of it.”

Male lead is reincarnated to save his wife

I’ve also read this one twice already. The female lead is kinda soft and gets embarrassed easily—not really my type, but the plot is definitely worth reading. Hurry up and read it, y’all!

Intro

When Shen Yuan encountered Su Jin again in his previous life, she had already become the Prime Minister of the current dynasty. As for him, the former top young master of the capital, he had long since fallen into the abyss, becoming a singer on a pleasure boat.

After a song ended, he was redeemed and sent to the Su Residence.

Su Jin respected and cherished him, gave him a roof over his head, and bestowed him with warmth. Shen Yuan fell deeper and deeper, but before he could express his feelings, Su Jin passed away.

Shen Yuan died to follow her in death, but instead, he returned to when he was fifteen years old.

At that time, he was not yet engaged, and Su Jin was just a poor scholar.

Shen Yuan gritted his teeth, casting aside all his pride, and thought of ways to coax and entice her every day.

The colder and more indifferent Su Jin was towards him, the more proactive Shen Yuan became.

He was not afraid of being mocked by the world, only wanting to marry his Wife-master early, to hold her hand and never let go for a lifetime.

[Note: This story will not specifically point out the male lead’s reincarnation time point; it’s all in the details. Whenever you feel that the male lead is acting strangely, he has most likely been reincarnated.]
