“The studio, dress, and makeup coordination—I’ve already contacted them, but I still haven’t received a reply from Ms. Song Eun Chae’s side.”

After returning to work for the first time in a while, Seung Yoon was approached by his secretary, who reported on wedding preparations with a pale, anxious expression. Seung Yoon, who had been barely listening to the explanation, soon scowled irritably.

It was because his momentum had fizzled out while he was putting on a show of hands-on leadership—fitting for an executive director—regarding the resort banquet hall arrangements.

Honestly, that woman was utterly useless. Even if they were trying to pull off a heist, their coordination would at least need to be in sync. Yet, of course, he couldn’t just say that to her directly.

His anger once again spilled over onto Secretary Jung.

“Then you should pressure them, shout at them—do whatever it takes to get an answer. Isn’t that exactly why I put you in that position?”

Secretary Jung, already hardened against Seung Yoon’s constant irritation, contempt, and condescension, calmly bowed his head.

“I’ll contact them again.”

As Secretary Jung hurried out of the noisy banquet hall to make a call, Seung Yoon watched his retreating figure with clear displeasure, while the other staff members in the hall anxiously monitored Seung Yoon’s mood.

When a request to rent the banquet hall came from a major domestic conglomerate, Senior Executive Director Han Seung Yoon appeared on the scene upon hearing the news.

He was famously absent from sight all day long, rarely ever seen outside his office—so his sudden appearance clearly meant he was scheming to take credit for himself.

And yet, there he stood, merely muddying the atmosphere. That man called himself an executive director?

Still, not a single person voiced their discontent aloud; they only exchanged knowing glances.

Amid the tense atmosphere, Seung Yoon remained composed—or rather, lost in thought. How could that woman act so detached, as if watching from across a river, when her wedding was just around the corner? Did she really think he was eagerly waiting?

While he was mulling this over, Secretary Jung returned to the banquet hall, having finished his call.

Seung Yoon glanced sideways at Secretary Jung, his hands shoved into his pants pockets.

“She says to go ahead and decide the attire and studio yourself.”

At those words, a hollow laugh escaped Seung Yoon involuntarily. He suddenly felt an urge—not to dress her in a gown, but to shove her into a burlap sack instead.

“If there was nothing to deliberate, why did her reply take so long?”

Secretary Jung, who never lost his poker face regardless of Seung Yoon’s scolding, paused briefly at that question.

“She… said she forgot.”

It was clear the so-called fiancée didn’t even consider her future groom worth her attention.

Even Seung Yoon, who prided himself on his thick skin, now felt thoroughly humiliated in front of his own secretary. His cheeks burned, and his ears grew hot. He gritted his teeth.

“Fine, go ahead.”

“Yes, sir.”

Seung Yoon briefly thought of Song Eun Chae. Her blank expression and detached attitude, as if she’d forgotten to screw one last bolt into place, unsettled him.

She was prickly and utterly devoid of coquetry—but he couldn’t deny she was beautiful. It wouldn’t have been surprising if she’d had five or six men wrapped around her finger.

No—while that might be possible for Seung Yoon, Song Eun Chae had been raised in an environment where any promiscuous behavior was impossible. Chairman Song would’ve certainly kept close tabs on her. Even the security detail under his command was known for ironclad secrecy.

As for passionate love—that, too, was practically out of the question.

Take the incident at the MK Hotel suite, for example. Song Eun Chae clearly had no idea about what really happened that day. Kwon Gi Ju, that control-freak mad dog, would never allow her the slightest chance to see another man.

Reassured by that conclusion, Seung Yoon suddenly froze.

From Song Eun Chae’s perspective, Kwon Gi Ju must be unbearably suffocating—so why was there no venom in her eyes when she looked at him?

Seung Yoon was struck by this sudden doubt. Just as an uneasy suspicion began to form, his phone vibrated in the inner pocket of his jacket.

The caller ID read “Singapore.”

Whenever Seung Yoon started seeing a woman, he took her on a trip. Since the women’s names all blurred together, it had long been his habit to save their contacts under the name of the travel destination country to avoid mix-ups.

“Yeah. I was about to call you. I’ll pick you up for dinner.”

Waving dismissively at the staff members who stood staring at him, Seung Yoon turned around and strode across the banquet hall, listening to the sweet, coquettish voice leaking from his phone.

On every employee’s face, an identical look of disappointment and disbelief spread.

Gi Ju skimmed through the pamphlet he’d received at the entrance of the music college.

They said graduation season at university was enjoyable for watching students’ final projects. Indeed, the music college was bustling with preparations for graduation recitals.

Song Eun Chae had also been frequently coming and going from campus under the pretext of ensemble rehearsals. As he thought this, his indifferent gaze swept over the pamphlet—and suddenly, Song Eun Chae’s name stood out with unusual clarity.

“I like names with the ‘ieung’ consonant. They have a soft, round image,” he could almost hear her chirp.

Then he recalled how she’d hurriedly added, as if stung by her own conscience:

“Of course, my personality is a bit sharp—but that’s just my hope for the name.”

After that, she’d muttered something else, then, seeming to realize the contradiction, burst into childlike giggles.

Gi Ju quickly closed the pamphlet. Instantly, her voice and laughter in his ears cut off sharply.

Instead, the real Song Eun Chae appeared—walking toward him in a group of three or four friends. Though she merely smiled occasionally at the far right edge of the group, she somehow drew his gaze unmistakably.

“That ski trip last time was fun. Since we don’t have time to go far, how about a club tonight? We’ve been listening to nothing but classical music lately.”

At someone’s suggestion, opinions flew in all directions. Eun Chae, who’d quietly listened, finally spoke up, saying she’d actually enjoyed the ski trip and thought the club sounded good too.

Gi Ju tucked the pamphlet into his inner jacket pocket and waited with his hands clasped behind his back. When their eyes met, Eun Chae looked at him with the clear expression of “Here we go again—what a nuisance.”

As the distance between them narrowed, Gi Ju spoke softly:

“You need to leave now if you don’t want to be late for your evening schedule.”

His words caused her friends to murmur.

“Do you have plans, Eonni?”

Eun Chae replied with a face worn out from resisting.

“I guess so. I forgot. You guys go ahead without me today.”

She added a few more conciliatory words to soothe her disappointed friends. Gi Ju stood behind, observing the scene.

Only after things settled did Eun Chae turn around. Her smile had vanished, replaced by composure.

“Did the Chairman call you?”

There was no such thing as an evening appointment—certainly none she herself didn’t know about. Instead of elaborating, Gi Ju simply replied:

“No.”

Her expression hardened instantly.

“I wanted to have fun—what are you even doing?”

“You never really liked clubs, did you?”

“Actually, I do. I’m a total rookie.”

“Is that supposed to be a boast?”

Eun Chae bit down hard on her lower lip. Then, with a sharp turn, she tried to follow her friends.

“They’ve already left. Where are you going?”

She ignored him completely, keeping her eyes fixed ahead. Her swaying long hair stirred something deep inside him. Even her unintentional gestures left him dizzy. Gi Ju dragged a hand down his face.

He sensed Eun Chae glancing back briefly. The moment their eyes met—hers sharp and warning, as if to say “Don’t follow me unless you want trouble”—he realized the truth.

No matter how plausible the excuse, it had all just been a flimsy pretext to return to her. And it was also a lie to say he hadn’t planned on being swayed by her.

He knew full well that the moment he saw her again, he’d be scheming to crawl beneath those tiny feet and win her back.

Gi Ju scoffed inwardly, calling himself a cunning bastard.

Soon, his gaze locked onto the back of Eun Chae’s head as she walked away, her flat shoes clicking softly against the pavement. He followed behind.

Speechless.

Eun Chae stared at Gi Ju sitting across from her, wearing a look of sheer disbelief. This cheap bar near campus—somewhere even she herself had only visited a few times back in her freshman year—he’d brazenly followed her in, shameless as if embarrassment belonged to someone else.

She simply couldn’t understand how someone with a presence more intimidating than a weapon could squeeze himself into that flimsy metal chair.

A chipped wooden bowl containing only half-filled cheese puffs, paired with two glasses of 500ml draft beer with a thin layer of ice—it was such a ridiculously mismatched sight it almost made her laugh.

I give up. I’ve lost.

Eun Chae picked up her beer glass with a half-resigned expression. Without hesitation, she brought her lips to the brimming, sloshing beer—and he looked up.

Their eyes met, triggering a sudden, indescribable surge of emotion—whether stubborn pride or reckless defiance, she couldn’t tell. She held his gaze as she swallowed the drink.

Gi Ju watched her silently. Maybe it was the dim lighting of the bar, or maybe the few sips of alcohol she’d just taken—but for some reason, the way her eyelids lifted seemed strangely alluring.

By now, her throat had reached its limit. Eun Chae squeezed her eyes shut and slammed the half-empty beer glass down on the table. Then, swiping the foam dampening the corner of her mouth with the back of her hand, she spoke:

“Can I ask you something?”

Gi Ju raised one eyebrow—his version of granting permission. His hands rested idly clasped on his thighs. It was supposed to signal attentive listening, but honestly, it just looked arrogant. He probably didn’t even realize it.

Eun Chae skewered one cheese puff after another onto her five fingers as she spoke.

“Do you have no self-respect, Kwon Gi Ju?”

He let out a quiet scoff, as if amused by the strangest thing he’d ever heard.

Truthfully, she’d always been curious. She, of course, harbored ill will toward him, which was why she’d been treating him to all sorts of humiliation under the guise of being a “second.”

But Kwon Gi Ju…

If she really had to name it—was it regret? Or guilt?

She popped the snack on her thumb into her mouth, crunched it loudly, and continued:

“Or… are you just shameless?”

“…”

Eun Chae glanced at him sideways. He gave no reaction whatsoever. She held his gaze in silent challenge.

Gi Ju slouched back nonchalantly, studying her as if measuring something.

Eun Chae swallowed unconsciously. His unusually vivid eyes, catching the bar’s dim light, gleamed with an enigmatic moisture.

That look stirred anticipation—though she couldn’t pinpoint exactly what she was hoping for. Maybe it was the relaxed atmosphere, or the setting of a campus bar, that had loosened her guard.

Just as she began to regret coming here at all, he spoke.

“Is that what you’re curious about?”

Gi Ju brushed imaginary dust off his thighs and asked in return.

Would those finely shaped lips now confess desperately, “I love you that much,” or recoil in disgust, saying, “Just stop it already”? Which answer was more likely?

The former? Or the latter?

“…The former.”

It was a simple, clear reply—so bluntly underwhelming that Eun Chae frowned.

“Huh?”

When she responded with a dry laugh, Gi Ju leaned forward and snatched the wooden bowl of snacks with his fingertips. The bowl slid helplessly toward him.

He grabbed a rough handful of puffs from the bowl, leaned back carelessly against the wall, and began chewing noisily.

As Eun Chae stared blankly, he tilted his head and muttered through his chewing:

“So then?”

“…”

“Now what are you going to give me? You said it was a deal, right?”

Sure enough—Kwon Gi Ju still had a long way to go before any real remorse.

Eun Chae plucked the last puff from her fingers and tossed it back into the bowl.

When he discovers she has gone, he risks everything to pursue her on land, enduring agonizing pain to transform his tail into human legs…

One-line summary: Male lead chases female lead. The male lead’s love is a bit sick, an invincible love brain.

Synopsis

During a voyage at sea, Jiang Yang accidentally captures a merman.

Servant: I heard that mermen are fierce and brutal.

Jiang Yang looks at the merman obediently rubbing her palm like a puppy: “You call this fierce and brutal?”

Servant: I heard that mermen have no human nature.

Jiang Yang looks at the merman with wet puppy eyes, obsessively calling her ‘A Yang’ like a childish infant: “You call this having no human nature?”

With great difficulty, she releases the merman back into the sea and returns to shore.

Who would have thought that in less than half a month, the merman, who should have been freely wandering in the South China Sea, would shed his scales, endure the pain of losing his tail, transform into human legs, and come ashore to find her?

He kneels at her feet, rubbing her palm, with merman tears rolling down: “A Yang, don’t abandon me.”
