After the meal ended amid idle chatter, Charlotte, who had been clearing the dishes, suddenly stopped mid-step as if realizing something and stood in front of the sink.
“When I eat with Tae Mi, we’ve gotten into the habit of dividing the roles.”
Charlotte said it casually, but Matiel’s expression instantly stiffened.
He stared at the water starting to flow from the faucet and the plates beneath it, then gently pushed Charlotte aside.
“What are you doing?”
“I’ll do it.”
Then, just as he reached for a plate, he quickly rolled up his sleeves. When he clenched and unclenched his fist, the veins on the back of his hand and forearm bulged prominently before subsiding.
Charlotte spoke.
“Have you ever washed dishes before?”
Of course he hadn’t. Matiel thought. Charlotte had probably asked the question while thinking the exact same thing.
Matiel didn’t answer and instead glanced around the sink area for a moment.
There was a roughly sewn cloth, a relatively clean-looking towel—though it looked like half had been cut off—and something round and rough-looking whose purpose he couldn’t guess.
Watching him fumble, Charlotte leaned sideways against the sink.
“When Tae Mi comes and eats, he washes all the dishes. Maybe because he was the youngest for so long at parties? He’s completely used to cleaning up after others.”
After a moment of hesitation, Matiel picked up the round, rough “something” and tentatively rubbed a plate with it.
