When The Silver Bell Of Charlotte's Pharmacy Rings (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 6
“Welcome.”
Baroness Lireld tossed out a brief, perfunctory greeting, then fell silent for a moment—as if allowing time for applause.
The crowd responded to her expectation with light cheers, clapping, and smiles… and the Baroness, looking satisfied, raised her hand slightly.
“As some of you may know, I haven’t been feeling well lately, so I’ve stayed cooped up at home. Back in the old days, I couldn’t go a single day without dancing—it drove me mad! But even I can’t fool time forever, it seems.”
Then, to everyone’s astonishment, she burst into a hysterical fit of laughter.
For a moment, the atmosphere nearly turned awkward—until someone reflexively laughed along, and the mood quickly warmed again.
People thought to themselves: Right. Rumors had been circulating for about a month now that the Baroness, who couldn’t resist throwing parties, had been in seclusion. If she’d been this quiet for so long, she was bound to be a little unhinged by now.
Eliot was among those who thought exactly that.
The only exception stood barely ten paces away from where Baroness Lireld stood—Charlotte.
‘Something’s definitely off. She hasn’t had a drop of alcohol, yet she looks drunk. And the more people gather around… the more anxious she seems. Hmm. That maid wasn’t lying after all. Sorry, Tae Mi, but I’ll need to look into this.’
Charlotte thought.
She was convinced that something—some force—had altered Baroness Lireld, rendering her strangely unlike her former self.
By the time the Baroness, standing on the dais, rambled on for the third time about how important this party was and how delighted she was to see everyone here today, Charlotte’s suspicion had hardened into certainty.
“So… all of you here tonight are truly lucky! Because I’ve prepared something absolutely magnificent! Please enjoy yourselves heartily until then—eat, drink, dance, and sing to your hearts’ content!”
The Baroness raised one arm high into the air.
Watching her behave like a ridiculous clown, Charlotte recalled the last leader of the collapsed revolutionary government from twenty years ago.
He’d been a loudmouth with little sense—more suited to leading a band of highwaymen than governing a nation.
She remembered reading a mocking obituary reporting how he’d rambled on before being shot dead. She’d been seven years old then.
‘His predecessor had been clever. After all, he managed to hold that chaotic revolutionary government together for nearly twenty years.
If that fool hadn’t let jealousy drive him to assassinate him, the monarchy would never have been restored in Roanoke.’
King Ryuen, who now occupied the throne, had ascended immediately after the revolutionary government stepped down. He’d swiftly reorganized and put in order a nation left in shambles by the last leader’s incompetent rule.
Though he was the first king to take the throne after the great republican revolution, he hadn’t needed to exert much effort to reestablish absolute royal authority.
Instead, he actively adopted beneficial policies from the revolutionary era—particularly those aiding the common people—and strengthened the bureaucracy.
While the class system distinguishing nobles from commoners had been reinstated, it wasn’t as rigid as before the revolution—and the boundaries were growing even blurrier.
Ironically, it was these generous and magnanimous policies that had most solidified King Ryuen’s position.
Charlotte often found herself wondering whether anything could be more contradictory than hearing people lavish endless praise on King Ryuen while simultaneously condemning the extravagance of the nobility.
After all, it was precisely because of that king that the nobility still existed—yet no one seemed to realize that the very same benevolent and thoughtful King Ryuen was the one granting nobles their titles, authority, and right to indulge in luxury.
“Excuse me.”
Charlotte, who had been clapping politely while watching the Baroness, turned her head at the voice speaking just above her ear.
It was Eliot. Naturally, he didn’t recognize Charlotte—but she identified him instantly.
After all, living in the heart of Yuril, the capital of the Kingdom of Roanoke, it was nearly impossible not to know Eliot Persbon.
‘His posters are plastered everywhere, after all.’
“I’m terribly sorry for interrupting so abruptly, miss. I’m…”
“I know, Mr. Eliot. You’re the son of House Persbon—but you prefer being called ‘Singer Eliot’ or ‘Actor Eliot,’ don’t you?”
Charlotte smiled sweetly, causing Eliot’s ears to flush slightly.
But instead of shyness, he responded with the warm, approachable smile his fans—especially young women—adored, and gestured for a handshake.
“To think such a beautiful lady recognizes me—what an honor! Yes, I’m Eliot.”
“The honor is mine. A famous actor like yourself, whose performances require booking a month in advance—or paying an outrageous premium—has taken the initiative to speak to me first.”
Watching her lightly grasp and shake his hand, Eliot decided that coming to this tedious, noisy party had been an excellent idea after all.
In truth, he’d only come because of Matiel.
Had Matiel not unexpectedly invited him along, Eliot wouldn’t have cared a whit about attending some Baroness Lireld’s party.
“May I ask for your name, madam?”
Charlotte nodded as if to say “Of course.”
“Please call me Sherry. I can’t tell you my surname—it’s… complicated.”
Though intensely curious about what complications she meant, Eliot couldn’t bring himself to ask.
The moment she mentioned “complicated circumstances,” a look as melancholy and fleeting as late autumn passed over Charlotte’s face.
Suddenly, a fierce, noble excitement swelled within his chest—
A feeling akin to a vow: if she harbored secrets, he would protect them at any cost…
“It doesn’t matter at all. Surnames are meaningless to me anyway—I never use mine either.”
“We have something in common, then, Mr. Eliot.”
Trending
Charlotte replied, and Eliot felt momentarily spellbound.
Though they exchanged a few more brief words afterward, he barely remembered them… nor did he realize how light and floating he’d felt the entire time he spoke with Charlotte.
He couldn’t possibly have imagined— not even in his dreams—
That Charlotte’s magic had, for just an instant, turned his mind to softened butter, stirring it into temporary mush.
“Then I hope to see you again soon, Mr. Eliot.”
“Indeed, Sherry. Until next time—without fail.”
Eliot turned away obediently. Charlotte had worried he might be more persistent, but it turned out to be unfounded.
She sighed in relief and watched his retreating figure disappear into the crowd.
He never attended trivial social gatherings—so why on earth had he come to Baroness Lireld’s party…?
“Sherry!”
While Charlotte was lost in thought, Baroness Lireld descended from the dais, her speech concluded.
Now the real party began.
Guests checked their dance cards for partners, exchanging glances to find mutual interest.
Wine glasses passed hand to hand, and music filled the air.
“That was a splendid speech, madam.”
“Oh my! Hearing that from you makes me so happy! But Sherry, you know countless witty remarks yourself. Still, this isn’t the time for talk—go dance! Shake hands with people, show off that beautiful face of yours! Show it off well! Make both men and women so captivated they can’t think straight!”
The Baroness was far more excited than before. Her words made little sense, and she kept repeating herself.
Even considering how much she loved parties and tended to raise her voice around crowds, this was clearly abnormal behavior.
She fidgeted like someone who’d downed an entire crate of strong whiskey—or like a puppy urgently needing to go, constantly glancing around nervously.
Something’s wrong, Charlotte thought.
Before the Baroness could slip away elsewhere, Charlotte firmly linked arms with her.
“We can dance later. First, I want to see this ‘big shot’ you mentioned. Who is it? Will you introduce me?”
“The big shot?”
Baroness Lireld echoed the words—but her voice sounded oddly vacant,
as if she couldn’t recall ever saying such a thing… or didn’t even know what “big shot” meant.
Charlotte spoke again.
“You said it yourself just now—that a ‘big shot’ would attend the party today. You told me to look forward to it. Don’t you remember?”
At her words, the Baroness’s eyes flickered slightly, as if struggling to regain focus—then she suddenly beamed.
“Oh dear, what’s wrong with me! Of course, you’re right! I did say that. Now that I think of it, I saw them come in earlier, but they’ve vanished now. Maybe they went to find my husband! After all, they’re not the sort of distinguished person who’d happily attend a little party like mine!”
The Baroness laughed again—a malicious, gleeful caw like a crow that had successfully tormented a cat.
It was a completely different impression from her strange laughter during the speech on the dais.
Charlotte tightened her grip on the Baroness’s arm.
“Could you tell me who they are while we walk, madam?”
“Oh, Sherry! All those men kneeling and courting you endlessly, and you never budged an inch.”
The Baroness made a mischievous face unbecoming her age.
“So that’s why—it’s because you’re picky! You’re more cunning than I thought, young lady.”
Charlotte shook her head with a smile—so pure and innocent it seemed impossible to doubt.
“That’s not it at all. I’m just curious who could be so remarkable as to earn the title ‘big shot’ from you, Baroness. You know I enjoy meeting new people and exchanging names.”
“True, absolutely! That’s what makes you unique—and that uniqueness is your charm. Maybe they went to my husband’s study—shall we go check together? It seems things here will run fine without me now.”
“Of course! I’m thrilled!”
At Charlotte’s bright reply, the Baroness’s gaze grew oddly intense—
as if looking at a child so adorable she wanted to nibble on them, or a fruit so luscious she longed to sink her teeth into it immediately.

“I will never let you return to him.”

At first, the male lead despised the female lead. Later, he misunderstood that she liked him, so he condescendingly and reluctantly reciprocated her feelings.
Then, he suddenly discovered that she was kind to everyone in the same way, and there was already someone she cherished in her heart, and that person was not him.
The male lead couldn’t believe it, he became angry and crazy. He was determined to capture her body and heart by any means necessary.

I’m on Tar Mi’s side here. The Duke seems a bit too careless about his relationship with Charlotte. Feelings or no, it’s as if he hasn’t given any thought to the consequences any of his actions will have on her and her life. I’d say any feelings he has are superficial at best.

To be honest, Tae Mi is my favorite character in this novel.
Wow that’s grotesque. I didn’t think this novel was going to be so gorey
