After a night on the train, Charlotte and Matiel arrived in Elikie just past 4 a.m.

Though days were still long, it was far too early, and a bluish, hazy fog blanketed the surroundings.

The sound of suitcase wheels echoing through the empty station building felt somewhat eerie, but the air was refreshingly crisp—likely because this was primarily an agricultural area.

It was qualitatively different from the damp, stale dawn air of industrial cities dotted with factories.

“The station’s empty here too. I wonder why?”

Charlotte spoke, her voice involuntarily lowered due to the overwhelming silence around them.

“Hmm. They probably haven’t canceled all train services here yet. It might just be because it’s so early.”

Matiel replied. However, Charlotte shook her head and tensed up.

“What are you talking about? The only places bustling regardless of night or dawn are suspicious taverns and train stations.”

“There’ll be someone waiting for us outside.”

The servant trailing behind them, luggage in hand, remained utterly silent—and that silence made Charlotte feel even more uneasy.

As they neared the station exit, her pace gradually quickened.

The air, which had initially felt refreshing, now tasted icy and unpleasant, as if she’d been chewing on ice.

Outside, it was just as dark, though slightly less oppressive than inside the building.

A few stars dotted the deep indigo sky, still showing no sign of sunrise, and a man of average height stood beneath them, smoking a cigarette.
