When The Silver Bell Of Charlotte's Pharmacy Rings (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 217
Charlotte, swallowing a sob, spoke.
“Don’t be so petty. I could just refuse to marry you for the rest of my life.”
Matiel let out a low chuckle from his throat and pressed a kiss—loud enough to be heard—against the corner of Charlotte’s eye. The tickle of her long lashes against his lips felt wonderfully pleasant.
Charlotte’s face was flushed red as she climbed into the carriage, though her tears had already ceased. Matiel watched silently as she carefully dabbed her eyes and cheeks with a handkerchief, and suddenly felt a sharp pang in his chest.
Yet the sensation was less painful and more akin to a keen delight—an intuition that he would never again witness anything more beautiful in his lifetime.
“Charlotte.”
Charlotte, who had been quietly gazing out the window, turned to look at Matiel. The spring sunlight filtering through the glass made her hair shimmer like freshly fallen snow.
“Yes?”
“You said you wanted to keep working at the apothecary for now.”
Charlotte fell silent for a moment.
When Matiel had proposed, she had only replied, “I intend to keep running the apothecary for the time being,” offering no other answer. She had hesitated, stepping back before the sudden reality of marriage to him.
On the other hand, abruptly closing the shop would indeed cause trouble for many. There were numerous regulars, like Mrs. Jess—Mr. Yuno’s mother—who had been coming to the apothecary since Charlotte’s mother’s generation to obtain the remedies they needed.
〈I’ll keep the apothecary running for a while. I may end up closing it eventually, but many of my patrons are elderly. I must introduce them to another place where they can reliably get their medicines even without me.〉
In essence, she wasn’t refusing his proposal—merely uncertain when she might accept it. Matiel seemed slightly bewildered but respected her wishes and let the matter drop.
‘But why bring this up now, of all times? Is he going to say we should forget about marriage? Well, I suppose that’s possible too. He’s a nobleman, after all—by noble standards, he’s not just past marriageable age but seriously overdue.’
